Anybody here ever been to Sturgis?
The biker rally of all biker rallies.
http://www.sturgismotorcyclerally.com/

Thinking about taking the motor home on
the road and going.

I've heard it's wild, but I just want
to see.

5. I was there last month for a bowling tournament
we went over to Schipshawana (sp?) and did some shopping in the amish community. it wasn't a bad little town and Indiana is about a mile down the road. We stayed at the Hampton Inn while we were there it was right on the border. My 11 yr old amused himself for quite some time standing under the signs at the state line hoping back and forth chanting Indiana Michigan.

6. No but I'm planning on going to Deadwood.
I'm just having a hard time dealing with how expensive it is to fly to friggin South Dakota. A long weekend there costs nearly as much as a Disney vacation. I do have a six-pack of Harley-Davidson beer from Sturgis 1997 when a friend of mine from work rode out there. He says it's insane and highly recommends it.

7. Ya I've been there several times..
It Is WILD!!!

Lots of bikers, Harleys and others..scant clothing on all ages/sizes biker ladies. Watch your belongings, and watch out for the cops: they get real puffed up about this time of year in "the Hills". Sturgis Rally is seen as a major source of revenue for the PD. They're looking fo ranything and everything to stop you and send the dogs sniffing through your belongings.
I've heard of people being stopped for having bling and other things dangling from their rearview mirror..

Its a cool time of year and great party, great casinos in Deadwood, party, party party and many of those who return to Sturgis, have been attending since the first rally..many are "weekend warriors"..Bikers who made their money and now return in prime style to gather with like minds..
Have a great time..fill us in when you return home..!!

Blaze

Edited on Wed Jun-01-05 11:04 PM by kaitykaity
but I want to see the bikes, maybe cadge a
ride or two. On the bikes dangit

Thanks for the tips. Real life stuff.

I won't be coming "home." Taking the RV on the
road for the winter. I've lived in this apartment
for 12 years, but have finally talked my single
Mom into going on a road trip. After South Dakota
we're headed to Mount Rushmore, Niagara Falls...

I'll have the Internet with me though so I'll
post a running commentary.

10. If you do...be prepared
Sexism everywhere. Losers everywhere. The most vile characters you could imagine wiggling their things and nasty women naked and puking in the gutter.

If that's your idea of a vacation, have at!

11. Not vacation. Adventure.
We're going all over the US, leaving Aug. 1.
Just seemed like a good first stop.

We're stopping at Yellowstone and at the
Badlands too.

The Badlands are probably the most strange and beautiful places on the planet. If you've seen them in pictures, it does not compare in person.
I really hope you enjoy it because that was one of the best trips of my life.

My edit: I'm sorry if I appeared rude with my previous reply. We've been trying to get the money together to do another trip so I was focused on my own experiences in that area.
I truly hope you have fun exploring SD, ID, WY. I want to go back so bad!

15. No, not rude at all.
Just brutally truthful, which I really appreciate.

I saw the Badlands in a Val Kilmer movie, and
ever since then have wanted to see them up close
and in person.

I work from home through the Internet so I'm taking
my work (and money making) with me when I go.

Good luck to you.

20. Yes
but not during the biker rally, drove through Sturgis just before it started. However, I have been to a biker rally in Arkansas called "Party Naked". There was a lot of drinking and a lot of nakedness. I don't remember much else.

21. I went in 1998 -
Edited on Wed Jun-01-05 11:59 PM by Madrone
I'm a chick - I'm not a partier - and I LOVED IT LOVED IT LOVED IT.

I think everyone should go once - bike or no bike.

The people are beautiful - friendly, kind - not what you'd expect. There's everything there from the guy that just crawled out of the gutter after falling asleep in his own puke to crawl to Sturgis to the doctors and lawyers, celebrities, bikers for Jesus - if you like people and people watching it's an amazing place to be.

And there's NOTHING like the smell of the exhaust from a gazillion Harleys.

I wanna go.

on edit: I was there the whole week, and camped in one of the many campgrounds in the area. DO NOT camp in the Buffalo Chip if you're not into the craziest shit you could ever possibly see in your life. Luckily I was with someone that's gone every year for 40 years - so he kept me away from those places :)

22. With that kind of recommendation
I'm sold.

It's the people watching I think. I won't do the
pickle licking, but I'll watch.

And I have a really old tattoo (got it 21, so 20
years ago) that really needs some new ink.

Oh fun.

23. Went 2 years ago...
had a good time. Spent more time seeing all the history and sights. The only thing we wanted to see and didn't have enough time was Devil's Tower. Sturis is overrated. Just a big flea market. I did get Sonny Barger's autograph and a pic with him. Deadwood is alot of fun and if you are into the show 'Deadwood' then you will definately want to take the tour of the town and be filled in on it's history. I had one of the best bowls of chili I've ever eaten in Deadwood. What actually impressed me and my husband the most was Crazy Horse. We went 3 times to the monument. They have an awesome laser light show on the side of the mountain. Be sure to drive thru Custard National Park. Good buffalo burgers, too!
