1. McAfee web-based subscription
Something like $30-40/yr. Been GREAT.

Plus, regular scans of AdAware, SpyBot and Hijack This.

12. They update their product 3 times a day... as for norton, they update
maybe once every 3 days.

Norton is crap. Has been since that idiot john thompson left IBM after screwing up OS/2 to join Symantec (Norton). They've been living off their name ever since.

I've had viruses come through on norton boxes. Not so with Trend.

Of course, I use Linux on most of my machines and therefore have no need to spend $60+yearly annual fees. But Trend is on my windoze boxes.

9. You want OK- Free or Pay-Great?
Edited on Thu Jun-02-05 07:08 PM by BlueJazz
OK-Free is AVG
Pay-Great is Nod32

Also Pay-Bloated and shitty is Norton.

I must add..I fix and service Computers every day.
In 4 years I've never had one messed up because of Nod32
I've seen hundreds screwed up by Norton.

Sorry, Norton folks :)

13. I never heard of Nod32...I will check it out. It comes with a free 30day
trial.
I didn't want to go with Norton because it had such a heavy footprint. Since I have a new machine I don't wanna start out fucking it up.

Thanks for the info.

18. My Pleasure. I think Nod32 is only 39 bucks and 12 a year.
It has a very small footprint and uses next to nothing of your Memory. It's Extremely non-intrusive.
I learned about it when I was an IT Manager at Kodak.

11. 2 firewalls and Norton.
Plus Adaware, Spybot: S&D.

I also have a large Cane Corso chained to my desk. When an infiltrator attempts access, I track the ISP and then (using my ISP warp transponder) beam said large, angry dog to said 'net miscreant to eat his/her vital organs.

So far, so good.

24. Two firewalls should not be used unless..
it's a router plus a software firewall. With the router and software firewall, you have layered protection. 2 software firewalls can compete against each other and cause crashes.

17. Kaspersky Anti-Virus
I use version 4.5. I'd avoid KAV 5.0 - it has been unstable on both my computers. It can update every hour, as Kaspersky releases new signatures about 8 times a day. It also has decent heuristics, especially for backdoors, though its heuristics aren't quite up with NOD32 and BitDefender. When they are so quick to respond, though, it doesn't matter to me if the heuristics aren't top notch. It's about the best AV for catching trojans.

Here's the webpage:

21. McAfee and Spy Sweeper
Just some friendly advice for you adaware users. It told me frequently that I had no spyware despite getting all the updates.I tried spy sweeper and it found a sh*tload of stuff that McAfee and adaware missed. They offer a free 30 day trial.
