Did he play in his band? Hank is one of my all time favorites. While I was growing up as a little child, my father played Hank's music and even though I come from the north, his music just did something to me.
Even now people ask "Where does that twang come from johnnie?"..LOL. It was all Hank.

15. I wish I knew more about their friendship

My grandfather ("Big Daddy") died before I was old enough to hear his stories. He did a lot of things in his life, but I'm sure he was not a musician. I think they may have been childhood friends. I hadn't thought about this in so long, your thread kicked up this memory of being told this by my mom and grandmother. I'm going to find out more about this interesting tidbit of my family history!

38. Update - he drove the family car in the funeral procession

My mom said she couldn't remember if he was a pallbearer or not, but she knew he drove the car Williams' wife rode in the day of his funeral.

She also told me a bit more about the family friendship. Apparently Hank Williams worked as a kid for my great-grandmother in a little general store she ran near Georgiana, Alabama. Interesting in that my grandfather and Williams were both raised by strong women who ran businesses in the Depression-era Deep South. I'm guessing the two women were friends, perhaps the store my great-grandmother ran was the same one owned by Williams' mother, Lillie.

Williams and my grandfather grew up in Georgiana/Mount Olive West, Alabama, and both moved to Montgomery at early ages. Mom didn't know how close they were, but thought that they kept in touch all this time. I know both were known for being charming but unreliable men who loved the bottle a little too much, so as likely as not they raised a little hell together!

After he married, my grandfather ran a kind of combination general store/gas station near Montgomery (what they called a "filling station" back then - I remember my mom using this term when I was growing up). Anyway, my mother said Williams used to be a regular customer there, and the friendship just continued over decades until Williams' death in 1953.

This was a very interesting walk through my own family history. Thanks to those who showed interest and prodded me to find out more!
