What should be the theme song of the next Democratic Convention?
Edited on Sat Jun-04-05 02:44 AM by Quixote1818
I was thinking of these three:

1. When the President Talks To God

2. Judy Collins version of "The times they are a changing"

3. Glen Campbell's song "Try a little kindness".

Any other suggestions are welcome. The more off the wall the better.

3. I'm not kidding. If you want to swing votes, and put a dagger in the...
...Repugs "solid south", then have Hank Williams, Jr. do a knock off of his Monday Night Football theme, but tailored to the convention. It would screw the minds up of the Bubba's overnight.

17. Trust me on this....
...I've lived in Nashville my whole life. Born and raised. Go with Bocephus on this, and we would win the election. David Allen Coe is just another country music product down here. Hank, Jr., is a God to these people.

6. "Compared to What"
The president, he got his war.
Folks don't know just what it's for.
Nobody gives us a rhyme or reason,
Have one doubt they call it treason.
We're chicken feathers all, without one nut.
Goddammit: Try to make it real, compared to what?

And, as a one time major WHO fan - it pains me to see the path the band and Pete Townshend have taken.

ON edit: Also, the lyric "meet the new boss, same as the old boss" isn't indicative of change.

21. "Democracy" by Leonard Cohen.
Democracy

It's coming through a hole in the air,
from those nights in Tiananmen Square.
It's coming from the feel
that this ain't exactly real,
or it's real, but it ain't exactly there.
From the wars against disorder,
from the sirens night and day,
from the fires of the homeless,
from the ashes of the gay:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.
It's coming through a crack in the wall;
on a visionary flood of alcohol;
from the staggering account
of the Sermon on the Mount
which I don't pretend to understand at all.
It's coming from the silence
on the dock of the bay,
from the brave, the bold, the battered
heart of Chevrolet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

It's coming from the sorrow in the street,
the holy places where the races meet;
from the homicidal bitchin'
that goes down in every kitchen
to determine who will serve and who will eat.
From the wells of disappointment
where the women kneel to pray
for the grace of God in the desert here
and the desert far away:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

Sail on, sail on
O mighty Ship of State!
To the Shores of Need
Past the Reefs of Greed
Through the Squalls of Hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on, sail on.

It's coming to America first,
the cradle of the best and of the worst.
It's here they got the range
and the machinery for change
and it's here they got the spiritual thirst.
It's here the family's broken
and it's here the lonely say
that the heart has got to open
in a fundamental way:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

It's coming from the women and the men.
O baby, we'll be making love again.
We'll be going down so deep
the river's going to weep,
and the mountain's going to shout Amen!
It's coming like the tidal flood
beneath the lunar sway,
imperial, mysterious,
in amorous array:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

Sail on, sail on ...

I'm sentimental, if you know what I mean
I love the country but I can't stand the scene.
And I'm neither left or right
I'm just staying home tonight,
getting lost in that hopeless little screen.
But I'm stubborn as those garbage bags
that Time cannot decay,
I'm junk but I'm still holding up
this little wild bouquet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

24. "Why Can't We Be Friends?" by War
I'd kinda like to be the President
so I can show you how your money's spent

Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?

Sometimes I don't speak too bright
but yet I know what I'm talking about

Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?

26. Gentlemen Rankers (Whiffenpoof song)
(With apologies to Rudyard Kipling)

To the legion of the lost ones,
To the cohorts of the damned,
To my brethren in the quagmire of Iraq,
Sings America, deceived now,
Poorly led, routinely scammed,
Give us courage to bring all our troopers back.

(All join in the chorus: )
We're poor little lambs who've lost our way,
Baa! Baa! Baa!
Little black sheep who've gone astray,
Baa-aa-aa!
Gentlemen-rankers out on a spree,
Damned from here to Eternity,
God ha' mercy on such as we,
Baa! Yah! Bah!

Sorry for the gloom.
Just the way I feel right now.

29. Nine Inch Nails' "Closer"
"I wanna fuck you like an animal" seems like a good lyric for 'em. I'm not really fond of the Democratic Party at the moment. If they really want to be Republicans that badly they could join the Republican party.

31. There is no time
This is no time for celebration
This is no time for shaking heads
This is no time for backslapping
This is no time for marching bands

This is no time for optimism
This s no time for endless thought
This is no time for my country right or wrong
Remember what that brought

There is no time
There is no time
There is no time
There is no time

This is no time for congratulations
This is no time to turn your back
This is no time for circumlocution
This is no time for learned speech

This is no time to count your blessings
This is no time for private gain
This is the time to put up or shut up
There is no time to come back this way again

There is no time
There is no time
There is no time
There is no time

This is no time to swallow anger
This is no time to ignore hate
This is no time to be acting frivolous
Because time is getting late

This is no time for private vendettas
This is no time not to know who you are
Self knowledge is a dangerous thing
The freedom of who you are

There is no time
There is no time
There is no time
There is no time

This is no time to ignore warnings
This is no time to clean the plate
Let's not be sorry after the fact
And let the past become our fate

There is no time
There is no time
There is no time
Because there is no time

There is no time
There is no time
There is no time
There is no time

32. The folk song some guy played at the March 19th Peace Rally in Seattle.
I don't remember all of it, but the last verse sticks out in my mind. Here it is, probably changed a little by my poor memory, but anyway...

"George W. Bush
The Man, you are it
You Bible-pounding, fascist
Piece of shit
You're paying Satan's
Retribution price
'Cause you sure as Hell didn't
Learn that shit from Christ!"

33. If Six was Nine - Hendrix
If the sun refused to shine
I don’t mind, I don’t mind
If the mountains fell in the sea
Let it be, it ain’t me
All right, ’cause I got my own world to look through
And I ain’t gonna copy you

Now if six turned out to be nine
I don’t mind, I don’t mind
If all the hippies cut off all their hair
I don’t care, I don’t care
Dig, ’cause I got my own world to live through
And I ain’t gonna copy you

White collar conservatives flashing down the street
Pointing their plastic finger at me
They’re hoping soon my kind will drop and die
But I’m gonna wave my freak flag high (high)

Fall mountain, just don’t fall on me
Go on mr. business man, you can’t dress like me
You don’t even know what I’m talking about
I’m the one that’s got to die
When it’s time for me to die
So let me live my life the way I want to
Sing on brother, play on drummer

37. Frank Zappa - Heavenly Bank Account
That would seem the most fitting at this point!

And if these words you do not heed
Your pocketbook just kinda might recede
When some man comes along and claims a godly need
He will clean you out right through your tweed

That's right, remember there is a big difference between kneeling down and bending over . . .

He's got twenty million dollars
In his Heavenly Bank Account . . .
All from those chumps who was
Born again
Oh yeah, oh yeah

He's got seven limousines
And a private plane . . .
All for the use of his
Special Friends
Oh yeah, oh yeah

He's got thousand-dollar suits
And a Wembley Tie . . .
Girls love to stroke it
While he's on the phone
Oh yeah, oh yeah

At the House of Representatives
He's a groovy guy . . .
When he Gives Thanks
He is not alone . . .

He is dealin'
He is really dealin'
IRS can't determine
Where The Hook is

It is easy with the Bible
To pretend that
You're in Show Biz
(And a-one, and a-two, and a . . . )

They won't get him
They will never get him
For the naughty stuff
That he did
(No no no no, no no no no . . . )

It is best in cases like this
To pretend that
You are stupid
(DOH . . . )

He's got Presidential Help
All along the way
He says the grace
While the lawyers chew
Oh yeah
They sure do

And the Governors agree to say:
"He's a lovely man!"
He makes it easier for
Them to screw
All of you . . .
Yes, that's true!

'Cause he helps put The Fear of God
In the Common Man
Snatchin' up money
Everywhere he can
Oh yeah
Oh yeah

He's got twenty million dollars
In his Heavenly Bank Account
You ain't got nothin', people
(TAX THE CHURCHES!)
You ain't got nothin', people
(TAX THE BUSINESSES
OWNED BY THE CHURCHES!)
You ain't got nothin', people
Thank the man . . . oh yeah

That's right
You ain't got nothin'
And they got it all
And your miserable ass
Is up against the wall
The only thing you have not tried
It's the sport of chumps
And that's SUICIDE
