is it okay to listen to classical music
really loud and to wave an air baton?

Or does that a) make you a hopeless dork or b) make you a rock and roll clod who does not know how to sit quietly and appreciate the subtle, softly played harmonic counterpoints and subverted fifths? Or both? Or something else entirely?

and does anybody rock like Rossini?

2. If it's ok to mime guitar playing when listening to rock
then I don't see why you shouldn't conduct an imaginary orchestra when listening to Rossini. Like, if you feel like it, you know? I dare say you don't do it in company anyway...

5. except that air guitar has been found to reduce smog
I usually play the air drums or use my hairbrush as a mike while I sing along, but nobody said that was okay. All that may just be a clue to why I never have company.

8. Good point, excercise justifies lots of things
Now to make my Rossini air-baton work-out tape and sell it on the internets. People will buy it - because they can do it sitting down!

9. i wouldn't advise it when you're driving. Especially at night....
...or after a high carb meal. But other than that, it should be OK.

10. When you are listening to some pieces
Like Gustav Holst's The planets "Mars" you have to play loud, very loud.

11. I find it difficult to listen to some classical pieces
There is simply so much emotion projected through the music that I have to be in a certain frame of mind before I can listen. It isn't rare for good music to have me in tears, both happy and sad ones.

13. I find that if you blast Classical music no one will complain.
Play Metal, Rap or anything else at high decibal levels and people will eventually complain about it but for some reason it seems that people will not complain if it's classical. I've tried this theory in more than a few locations and it's always the same. Weird.

And there is nothing wrong with air batoning if it makes you feel good.

15. Actually it is a good exercise
Whenever I was studying a piece to perform in a group, I did use to beat out the time by air baton just so I got a clue. For example some composers have works with wicked meter changes (like going from 7/8 -5/8 -3/4 - 7/8. Now try that with air baton....it's fun!
