1. Had to....
be defeated by Palpatine or the rest of the story wouldn't have happened. ;)

In any case, I chose option two.

7. "What's my name?!"

"What's my motherfuckin' name?!"

"You're Mace Windu..."

"Goddamn right! And don't you forget it!"

(apologies to Shaft)

3. Mace would have taken Sidious out.
If not for Anikan's interference. Mace was the Jedi battle master and he was eating the Sith lightning up with his sabre. Sidious was done.

18. Sorry, Palpatine let him have the best of him to win over Anakin
Simple - Palpatine staged it so that Anakin would have thought that the Jedi were turning against the Republic and the Senate. Palpatine played Anakin to a "t" to win him over.

19. I don't know that Anikan cared a whit about the Senate or Republic.
In those terms. He took out Mace because he wanted to save his wife and that's it. If Mace killed Sidious then he couldn't save Padme. His only interest in going with the Republic propaganda was because he needed Sidious and it helped him justify his actions which he knew were wrong. Do you really think he would have turned on the Jedi if Sidious had never brought up the dark side ability to heal? I stand by my statement, Mace would have killed him had not Anikan intervened.

4. Palpatine was simply occupying Windu.
Option #2 got the most votes over at theforce.net. Palpatine is the master of manipulation -- he knew this would nudge Anakin off the edge.

16. I agree
Luke needed the help of Vader to defeat the Emperor at the end of Return of the Jedi. He was basically helpless on the floor before him...

5. Wow -- this surprises me!
I almost didn't post this poll because I though that #2 was too obvious. I still think that's they way Lucas intended it, but it's interesting to see that so many people have a different opinion.

6. Palpatine would not have let Anakin leave if he didn't know
what was going to happen. Anakin left and said he was going to tell the council. Palpatine was only occupying Mace until Anakin got there to see what Palpatine wanted him to see, an "assasination attempt" or a "betrayal". You notice the timing that Palpatine loses his lightsaber at right about the time Anakin arrives. He knew he was there, and then was the time to do his little show that Mace was planning to "overthrow" him.

The book took it a little further, with Palpatine doing an audio recording of the whole incident, saying they were unjust and making an illegal attempt at a power grab, all while smiling and doing the killing himself.

Lord help me, I am again a Star wars nut.

8. He also staged his capture at the beginning so Anakin would
kill of Dooku. I thought Dooku was really a cool character. He was a bad guy, but for the right reasons.

9. If you read the EU, you'd know that Mace had invented Vaapad
...a style of lightsaber combat that is considered by Jedis in the know to be the most lethal and effective form of lightsaber combat ever invented. Traditionally, there are six levels of lightsaber training; Mace Windu adapted a seventh from a multi-tentacled beast called a Vaapad that strikes so fast, most people don't even know haw many tentacles there are.

10. It seemed to me that Palpatine would have been finished
If it was just a straight duel between Mace and himself. Both Windu and Yoda owned him (Palpatine had to throw platforms at Yoda to get away, which weren't available to him in his fight against Windu.)

On the flip side though, I do think Palpatine knew his real strength was manipulation and he wouldn't have allowed himself to be in that confrontation unless he was certain Anakin was going to come to his aid.

12. Mace got zapped out a window, Yoda called for Bail to "hurry"
And told Bail he had failed.

The movie title is "Revenge of the Sith" is it not? Anakin lost his legs and an arm, Dooku lost his arms and his head. The only other sith left is Sidous. In order to get revenge, he won the fights, and the empire.

Not to fret, it all ends up right in Return of the Jedi.

13. I believe that Palpatine was just playing the victim
until Anakin came back, and Palpatine knew that Anakin was going to come crawling back to him, to learn what Palpatine promised him. Palpatine could have defeated Mace, with no problem, but played the victim into to stall time, and to make Anakin believe that the Jedi wanted to stab hin in the back...We are talking Palpatine, this guy a evil genius on the highest level...and the reason he is my favorite overall Star Wars character...

14. Mace's Saber does say "BMF" on it
The prop builders at ILM engraved it on the hilt to pay homage to his character in Pulp Fiction

I just saw ROTS tonight for the sixth time. May do #7 tomorrow!

Oh and I say Mace defated Palpatine until Anakin interfered. We know Jackon's one request to Lucas was "Don't make me go out like a punk"

17. Something other
Windu didn't kill him immediately. So he went the way of a typical plot-generated character and out the window like the rest of em.

Sucks to be him. You gotta be ruthless about these things..

Wait... Anger growing...

20. My first take is that Mace would have fried Palpatine had it not been
for Anikin. But my husband made a good point. Palpatine went through the other 3 or 4 council masters in what, 2.5 seconds? He (Palpatine) is clearly saving Mace for the manipulated scene to seduce Anikin. He was in control the whole time. Planned it down to the second.

Must see this movie again.
