What Is Your Least-Favorite Airport? -- What About Your Most-Favorite?
Least favorites:

Dulles (VA) -- those stupid slow, cumbersome, antique, ferry-busses to get from the main terminal to the outer terminals

DFW (Dallas) -- those stupid bumpy, slow, jerky, late, TrAAins!

Favorite:

BWI (Baltimore) -- Great parking system with digital signs to indicate which rows have parking spots and little green lights OVER the empty spaces so you can easily spot them as you drive down the aisle.

But... I was only changing planes and passing THROUGH. I didn't have to deal with parking, ticketing, security, etc etc.

3. Least is DFW
Impossible to navigate by car, terminals are spread out all over.

If you come in by shuttle, you get a short, very distorted pre-recorded notification of which terminal you flight is located. If you miss hearing your flight tough.

Best was Portland OR, before they "remodeled" it. You could easily walk from the terminals to short term parking/ car rental. There was even a gas station at the airport to fill up those rental cars. Plus the coffee they served at the airport was excellent. This was 10 yrs ago or so, I suspect it is now as impossible as any other airport.

5. I'd have to go with DFW...
... as the worst.

Of the big-city airports, I think Minneapolis-St Paul is pretty good for being as spread out as it is. The people-mover walks do work, and help when lugging a bunch of stuff.

But, it seems as if nothing goes right at DFW. Trouble getting from one terminal to another, always something wrong with connecting flights, the planes, and getting out on another flight. DFW never has been pleasant.

47. PDX is still not too awful, post-remodel. And the free coffee persists.
Plus now the light rail, which stops just outside the terminal, will take you right downtown, and even out to the garish suburbs.

10. In my experience........
Worst Big - Dulles - Always being renovated, and yes, the lumbering buses are a pain in the neck.

AND LaGuardia - LaGuardia just stinks, on time performance is very poor.

Worst overall - San Antonio - Dirty, Dingy, Bad Air Conditioning

Best Big - BWI and Newark
Best Overall - Long Beach, CA - Just like stepping off the plane right into the 1940's. You walk down the steps right outside. When you land you go from the impressive mountains to the beautiful Pacific. Baggage claim is outdoors, I love this airport.

I agree that it is very 1940-ish and fun. (But only when the weather is nice.) Planeside luggage pickup is good too... no chance of the bags getting lost enroute to a central luggage claim area.

13. Argh, I hate those "TrAAins" at DFW!
I recall also disliking O'Hare when I was transferring from the domestic to international terminals. It was under construction and the signs directing you to the international terminal were nowhere to be found.

Moscow Sheremetyevo is horrible...absolute chaos there.

I like London Heathrow and Gatwick...and Paris Charles De Gaulle is pretty slick.

28. Gack! I loath O'Hare.
I honestly think that place is where the phrase "Airport Hell" originated. Literally, if I'm flying out of Illinois I'll book out of Champaign or some other small airport and connect anyplace EXCEPT O'Hare.

LAX was awful from what I recall of it, and I also remember thinking Miami was no real joy--but I can't remember what it was about them that I disliked. (Maybe it was just me being cranky after being jammed into too little space for too long on what passes for commercial flights.)

St. Louis Lambert is quite tolerable, Indianapolis is a good airport to fly out of with a kid (don't laugh--some are just awful!) and I have to admit, I was pretty favorably impressed with McCarran Airport when I was in Las Vegas.

I honestly think flying is such a stressful thing these days that nobody is ever going to be thrilled with any given airport.

35. Well, like I said, I know it well - which has a lot to do with my opinion.
Also, the security there is MUCH more efficient than many other places I've been... and friendlier in my experience, too.

I am in Milwaukee now and fly out of O'Hare whenever possible. You can go direct ANYWHERE from Chicago. I also fly American Airlines whenever given the option. They have good presence at ORD, not so much here in Milwaukee.

I have 3 trips in a few weeks out of Milwaukee: Minneapolis, Dallas and Vegas - we'll see how those go. I've never stepped foot in TX before and all the DFW remarks are not encouraging.

39. You DO have more choices out of O'Hare. Very true.
You can get better schedules and maybe even save some cash by flying out of there. That really is what it is all about, I guess...

I dunno--my dislike for O'Hare is an old one and certainly one that is based on bad personal experiences. I've never felt like O'Hare was a "happy place" and you are one of the few people I have ever heard say anything nice about services and attitudes there. Maybe they have cleaned it up and improved it...

Next time I fly maybe I'll give it another chance--I dunno.

Chicago O'Hare would rank next least favorite.

Boise and MSP are the ones I'm most familiar with, and they are both okay.

I liked Nashville's airport.

The only other airports I have been to are Sea-Tac, San Francisco, Phoenix, Denver, Orlando, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Memphis, and a few small stops like Lansing, MI and Wausau, WI.

I was at Logan once and couldn't get over the stench.

I like Nashville's airport, cause it has a smoking lounge.

I like London/Gatwick even better, because it has a smoking lounge that's not encased.

24. MSP has a lot of things I like about it.
The trains are fast and efficient. Parking's been greatly improved. I love the motorized walkways. But whoever designed the curbside pickup area is crazy. It's an exercise in chaos. To me it ruins the whole experience of being at that airport.

I like Orange County, CA. Everything's so well run.

So it ranks very high on my all-time list of crummy airports. They need to do some rodent control.

I wasn't too thrilled about all the guys with guns after 9-11, either, especially when I later learned the guns were unloaded. Don't put up a scarecrow to fight a terrorist, sheesh. At least they got rid of that sideshow.

27. I can't stand Philly
I've had my share of troubles with US air and massive delays. The last time I was at Philly I had a delay so long that it caused me to miss my connecting flight and I had to spend the night at some hotel in Greensboro NC (courtesy of US Air). Yes I took a shuttle on the Billy Graham Memorial highway to some Hampton Inn.

As for favorite...

That is a tough one because they all pretty much suck but I would have to go with Myrtle Beach. It's small, easy parking and you don't have to walk a mile to get to your gate

36. Least favorites: George Bush Intercontinental (Houston) and
Reagan National (DC). Gore Vidal once remarked that the Senate displayed a very rich sense of irony when naming one of the most unsafe airports in the nation (those very short runways are just plain scary) after the President who fired the air traffic controllers.

Favorites:

Madrid, ES, because it's always the start of something glorious

PDX (Portland), because when I land there it means I'm home

Hartsfield (Atlanta), because the bars in the international wing are always swinging with a wild party atmosphere

43. My picks:
Edited on Sun Jun-05-05 01:31 PM by EOO
Least:

DFW (Dallas) - Only because the last time I went there, I was forced to stay overnight because of an airport closure

LGB - Long Beach - The only reason I go out of there is for Jetblue flights, but it sucks if you have to wait long periods of time for your flight because there's nothing to do!

DTW (Detroit) - The Northwest part of the airport is very nice, the rest of the airport sucks ass. At least use some WD40 on the baggage claims every now and then!

PHX (Phoenix) - I hate flying Southwest. And this airport, you have to walk 500 miles before you get to your connecting flight.

Most favorite:

LAX - because I like to watch the huge 747s and A340s land and take off.

SMF (Sacramento) - Very nicely renovated! Has the best food court of any airport I've ever been in!

LAS (Las Vegas) - The new terminal where the airlines that are NOT Southwest or America West go is pretty impressive!
