Buy Blue -- cat food
Can anyone recommend cat food that is considered blue and also considered excellent for felines?
My furry boys like a product by Nutro but have learned that Nutro makes Repug contributions.
Yesterday I picked up Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance and the boys seem to like it. Does anyone know whether that company is red or blue? I did a search on "Buy Blue" and found nothing on the company.

1. I would think Newman's Own is okay
I can't find it on Buy Blue, but it's organic and they donate the profits to charity, so that seems to indicate liberal values.

3. Newmans makes cat food?
Wow, I didn't know, I'll have to check it out.

16. Try the Newman's Own Organics Store Locator here:
Only search by state -- I found several omissions when searching my area by zip code:

4. Where can you find it?
I was at Petco yesterday and didn't see it. I thought I'd take a chance on the Dick Van Patten food. Since he's kind of celebrity, I was hoping someone here knew his politics.

A small pet supply shop in the mid-atlantic, northeast, and Canada - owned by Canadians - will have Newmans Own. Maybe a Pet Smart would have it, too.

edit: Newmans Own also makes a dog food.

15. You might be able to order it from their site.
I didn't know that they made cat food either. Check their site and see if you can find it-it's worth a shot.

2. Nutro is red? Dammit.
My cats are on it now. I really don't want to switch them again.

18. CEO is very red - sorry. Switch them to Royal Canin
Royal Canin is French based and has made no political contributions to candidates here in America. They do have a plant in Missouri

19. Thanks, LS.
I'll feed them the rest of this current bag of Nutro, and then I'll switch them.

20. Actually, buy your new cat food now and ease them into the new brand
Cats can be finicky. When I swapped out of Nutro, I mixed the remaining bag with the new stuff so it wouldn't be a shock to their system

7. Trader Joe's Private label
A friend of mine swears by it, says the cats won't eat anything else now. Costco has PL catfood too, I think.

8. Thanks for your suggestions
I'll look for the products you recommended. I would still like to know whether anyone knows anything about Dick Van Patten's politics.

12. Dammit
He contributed to Reagan in 1980. Otherwise he seems apolitical. At least his company isn't as bad as Nutro.

9. We've used the Natural Balance
Venison and green pea. The cats love it. I don't use Nutro for other reasons and have to be careful of what foods I buy for the cats...2 diabetics out of 4 brothers. The venison formula is even low enough in carbs for the diabetics to have a little occasionally for a treat.

11. That's good to know
My boys have had Natural Choice for 5 years but ever since I learned Nutro was red, I've felt guilty about buying it. I went for the Dick Van Patten because in the back of my mind he didn't seem like the Repug type.
I hope I'm right.

13. See this thread:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=243&topic_id=4388&mesg_id=4388

I feed mine Innova Evo, Organix, Wellness, Artemis Fresh Mix, Prairie nature's variety, and Natural Balance. Feeding one brand can lead to food sensitivities, so I mix it up.

Go to www.pookiesbowwowbakery.com for additional brands (Pookie's is blue, too).

14. Great suggestions
Unfortunately I don't recall seeing those brands (except Natural Balance, the one I found yesterday) at my local Petco. Do you know where they are available?
I'm going to check out the Newman's Own and Trader Joe's cat foods that others mentioned. Have you, oops, have your cats tried those brands?

17. You can visit these sites
www.artemiscompany.com and www.merrickpetcare.com . They both have search functions to help you to find local holistic pet food retailers.

My cats have tried both Trader Joe's and Newman's own. They didn't like Newman's own (which is too bad-it's good stuff)! But they did like the canned varieties of Trader Joe's foods.
