These are the baby birds peeking out now that they are able to.

I was hoping for bluebirds in my new bluebird box, but instead a mama and daddy nut-hatch family moved in and had 5 or so babies. I've been listening to them chirp and cheep like crazy--and the mama and daddy both feed them. Back and forth to the box constantly. Really sweet.

They should be fledging soon.

3. Oh, how cute. We have baby birds on our front porch.

The mother built a nest where the columns meet the roof overhang, and the babies recently hatched.

I have about 8 Bluebird boxes on my property, but rarely get Bluebirds in them. They check them out but are usually run off by the House Wrens or Tree Swallows, which is fine with me - I love them all.

I was mowing one day and had to stop the mower to move a frog out of the way. Turned out it wasn't a frog, but a fledgling House Wren. How am I rewarded for my act of chivalry? This little baby (the size of my thumb) was comically viscous! Trying to tear my hand apart, doing no damage at all, of course. Meanwhile, Mama bird is going nuts dive bombing me while I admire her fledgling. I moved baby to safety and was CHASED back to the mower by Mama bird - really quite hilarious.

The Tree Swallows are another matter entirely; I've moved their fledglings on occasion and the parents would just glide near me, keeping an eye on things. Very friendly, sociable birds. And beautiful, too.

10. Cool house!

I'm curious. Why the metal plate around the "door"? And what are those wire thingys sticking out at the top and bottom corners? I love birdhouses, and I've never seen such a hi-tech one.

11. The metal plate around the hole keeps other larger birds from

enlarging the hole. This particular house is made for trying to get a bluebird family to nest since so many bluebirds have lost their natural habitat over the years. If the hole is chewed by other larger birds into a bigger hole, the bluebird will pass it up (because it makes her nest more vunerable).

The wiry thingys are bendable and allow you to open the front door in order to 'monitor' your bluebird nest--if you have a bluebird nest. You can see how many eggs, check on the babies growth, etc. And bluebirds are quite tolerant of this and won't abandon the nest or attack you. Very gentle birds.

So this birdhouse was made specifically for attracting bluebirds, but this nuthatch family got it first and I don't mind. It's the first year I've had the birdhouse up.
