I don't live in the city anymore, but I hope the people are as sick of Kwame's corruption and thievery as everyone else is. I also hope that they are not somehow deceived into voting for Sharon McPhail, who is equally corrupt and has the additional blessing of being outright insane ("Kwame's trying to electrocute me").

Freeman Hendrix is a good candidate. I actually like the repub who ran in the 2001 primaries-Bill Brooks. He is a former GM executive and was the only candidate who had the balls to say that the biggest problem facing Detroit is the poverty of it's residents. No one else would say it. They'd say it was racism, or abandonment of the city, or economic problems within the auto industry, or any other number of reasons. Those things are all factors, and many contribute to the poverty, but drive around Detroit-it's the poorest urban setting I've ever seen in the USA.

They can fix the roads, build new stadiums and fancy restaurants, but as long as the majority of the people in the neighborhoods outside of the Potemkin Village downtown are poor, nothing will change. People have to have money to build a good tax base and economy.

Saying that poverty is the problem is rather obvious. Bill Brook might say this, but the causes of poverty is what the others seem to be talking about. The auto industry had been building plants away from Detroit for generations, rather than support the local economy, and not utilizing or modernizing plants in the Detroit metro area.

Much of heavy industry has moved overseas, globalization has a huge impact. This is not unique to Detroit, but true of many of the Rustbelt economies of the Northeast.

and the Big Three continue to lose market share to foreign competition, and things won't get better any time soon.

and we have a mayor popularly known as "Mumbles." He's a nice guy, personable, means well, has always had a reputation as an "urban mechanic," a can-do guy who can make the public works machinery function properly (which begins to sound an awful lot like "makes the trains run on time," doesn't it?)-- but even his supporters make excuses for his lackluster verbal (and cognitive?) skills.

Anyway, it's his third term, and there are some capable opponents coming out of the woodwork and positioning themselves for the next election. All Democrats, I hasten to add; I don't think I can remember a mayor of Boston who identified as Republican. Governors are another story, regrettably-- Massachusetts has a lot of Repuke suburbs, including the one Mitt the Shitt claims to live in (when he's not out on the road someplace accumulating markers for his expected presidential run) which used to be where the John Birch Society was headquartered...
