Who else is growing tomatoes in containers this summer?
I'm growing "Mr. America"s. They're a new variety. Seem to be doing okay so far. Who else here is exercising their green thumb?

2. I wasn't going to
Edited on Mon Jun-06-05 01:19 PM by missb
since I have an expanded garden space this year. But I established a new patio area and decided that a few big pots of tomatoes would look nice.

I haven't had problems with the deer trimming my tomatoes (though they topped a neighbor's plant), but I figure if they do decide to attack my tomatoes they won't get the containered ones. They don't make their way down my stairs to the patio. Too close to the dog run.

on edit: spelling. Wugh.

3. This is the first summer I've tried it
I got tired of the birds and other critters getting to them. Luckily I get plenty of sun on my front porch so they're doing really well. Just planted them three weeks ago and I've had to stake them already.

5. The only problem I've ever had with container tomatoes
is watering during really hot weather. We often take vacations during the summer. I always have a house/pet sitter, but she doesn't always water as well as I do.

Sounds like yours are doing very well!

4. six varieties
they're all coming along splendidly, with my Carnivals already almost 6' tall. I'm going to walk out there one day and it will have eaten the dog and started referring to itself as Audra III.

9. I am trying for the first time
this year. I actually have them in pots. I just bought the cages yesterday.

Does anyone know how long they take to bear fruit?

12. Me.
Two varieties of tomato, bell peppers, cucumber and lettuce. It's the first time I've tried all four, but my goal is to be able to eat a home-grown salad this summer..

14. I'm trying for the 5th summer in a row.
Hope springs eternal! I've got two varieties going that claim to do well in pots.

Tried grape tomatoes a few times, and they grew out of control and I couldn't keep them picked and it was a big mess out back!

The regular tomatoes always go bust. I get the soft brown spots on the bottoms of the fruit. Isn't that a root-rot problem?

At first I vowed Never Again this spring, but I have to keep trying.

Good Luck!
