such a terrible thing in our society to come to decisions about, would we? Those poor dogs didn't get that reputation out of thin air.

If it weren't for men who used and bred and taught generations of these poor working dogs to fight each other to the death, to rip out eyes and entrails, you and I wouldn't be faced with having to discuss their detriment on our lives and our children.

Why? For the same reason any one of us have ever been mean, rude, sarcastic and mean: it's an easy mask for insecurity and fear.
Also, we learn from those we love.

But take heart, radwriter, I believe it was the sociologist Durkheim that once said that a society couldn't exist without deviance. Even more, the positive experiences we have will be even more happy because they're contrasted by those assholes we meet in life.

I guess, my only suggesstion, and this is the only way I can see to treat this situation progressively, is to be civil to these assholes and laugh it off.
The reaction they (the assholes) create is only found in your mind, so don't let em get to you, and you wont even bat an eyelid.
Finally, to be even more Pollyanna-ish, take heart that the people we see as mean and indifferent can be life lessons for all of us.

Getting out of the restaurant industry and transferring to regular 40/wk hours, really helped my lifestyle, that's for sure. Also, savings, and I only spend money on good food, good alcohol, and good entertainment.
Without clothes/furniture/presents adn the like, you can buy some really shi-shi rockstar items.
