Wedding help!

A couple I know are FINALLY getting married. The thing is, they've been together forever and already have everything they want (I think). I really want to get them something for their wedding cause it'll be extra special, but I've NO idea what to get for the couple with everything.

don't have significantly higher success rates than others.

Longevity might be a plus but it's no guarantee by any means.

And one might ask why they chose to get married after all this time - and change a presumably quite satisfactory arrangement. Perhaps trying to save a relationship in stasis or decline ? (Of course, making things more legally secure as we age and encounter life's risks isn't a bad idea either.)

I was just Best OldLeftieLawyer for two old friends who flew back to Boston from their home in Tuscany to get married - for tax and estate reasons (lots of $$$ there). They've been together 30 years, and it was simply the loveliest marriage I've ever had the privilege to witness.

I wish your friends the absolute best, and you could really honor them by contributing to the campaign of the politician in their area most closely aligned with the legalization of gay marriages.

Maybe a topiary rose bush or a bonsai. Something that is an indoor, potted plant, but lives.

If all else fails, you could ask them. Put politely, you might let them know that they should put together a list for those who want to buy them things to mark their marriage.

Just ask. They'll be flattered you want to give them a gift, and while they may hedge and demur, persist. Get others involved, too - they'll eventually realize that people want to give them gifts they'll like to help commemorate the day.

a spa package, or a bottle of champagne/wine for their room, or something special that's an "extra" at the resort. It will be really nice surprise when they arrive and my guess it will make a great impression as being especially thoughtful.

some good friends got married, unfortunately they weren't going to be able to have a honeymoon. Time and $$$$. So for a gift, a group of us got together and rented them a NICE hotel room (complete w/jacuzzi) and we made them a basket. We got blankets b/c the room had a "fireplace", a bottle of champagne, 2 glasses and snacks.

They were so touched that a group of their friends got together and "set the stage" for their wedding night. I know that they stood together and cried for about the first 20 minutes they were in the room.

Plus if others pitch in, you can really go all out without breaking the bank.

Make a theme out of it. You could do a night in basket w/ maybe some cavier, a bottle of wine, a couple of glasses, a romantic cd (especially some old jazz-ask progmom for some great suggestions), massage oil (not anything kinky,but a clean scent) and place it all in something that they can reuse. It can be anything that can hold the items.
Do they garden? You could get some seeds, gloves, shovels, a nice plant, etc and put them in a large planters pot w/ a cheery note about how you hope that as these plants grow their love will too.

Go for something simple but from the heart. Ideas like this show that you took the time to gather everything together and really thought about them while you did this. Anyone would like it since you can gear it towards their interests.

For most of my really close friends, I make them a special piece of artwork that I can ensure no one else will ever have.....people usually love it and end up hanging it in a prominent place, so I know that they like it and they aren't just being polite (usually if people don't, it gets put in some obligitory yet obscure place like the guest room or something)....anyhoo, my point is that most people love individualized, creative stuff over materialistic stuff any day (well, assuming that the most wanted stuff on their registery gets taken care of by someone else-ha!).
