Post a picture of how you wish Your Place looked
Okay, I don't know these folks but I love the name of this place.

These pictures show how I would love to spend my summer days. If only there was no rain...

6. I visited Falling Waters by Frank Lloyd Wright
and what kept hitting me is how modern it was for such an early house. I loved it.

12. Did you notice how narrow and low passages were?
My 6'4" LomL found Falling Water very claustrophobic; he had to hunch to get through doors and turn sideways (he's very broad shouldered). It was okay for me.... but not ideal. (Bad kitchen, too.)

I found it interesting as a concept, and the fact that the cantilevers had held up for 70+ years amazing...

FLW was definitely an innovator, and his public spaces (Grady Gammage in Tempe, AZ, the Dial building) were great. Houses.... dunno bout those.

and some bleach would cure that, but I know what you mean. I hate that musty smell as well, but I would love to see FLW's creation firsthand.

131. There's a reasonably-priced resort nearby
If you're ever in the Western PA area, the cheapo ski resort Seven Springs is close by - it might make a nice weekend.

I was there once over New Year's and although the resort was fun, the woods were Fallingwater is were bleak and cold; but I understand it's lovely during the rest of the year.

35. The location, first and foremost.
The full finished basement with wet bar, the deck, the natural wood trim, the age, the mature trees, the fact that it's a split-entry (I grew up in one). Lots of emotional, nostalgic reasons.

But the biggest appeal is the location.

Yeah, I'm not that nuts. Tallest thing I ever free soloed was... 12 feet, maybe? ;) To me, it's because we're all human, we all make mistakes, and you only have to make one mistake in that situation, and it costs you your life.... I guess that's true in a lot of cases (driving, etc.), but it's just so much more apparent in that one.

113. We're hiring a painter for the exterior of our house --
wonder what he'd charge for THIS one? He'd have to do it with a small sable brush and it would take HOURS!

There were houses like this in Newton, Massachusetts, and certainly other places in New England. I like the brown outlining better than the black you sometimes see.

75. I confess I'm torn...
Redmount Hill House in East Galway is certainly roomy....

But the 16+ acre smallholding in Co Leitrim has its charms--there's a stream running through the property.

Other properties include "Thoor Cottage", Thoor, Ballylee, Gort, Co. Galway--which I've mentioned before.

107. Oh, definitely, you MUST.
I almost hate to make such a claim, but I don't think there's a more beautiful area on Earth. And lots of interesting quaint places to stop when you need a meal or a place to sleep. Myself, I never got further north than Fort Ross, which is maybe 150 miles north of San Francisco, and there's soooo much more than that to see.

And I believe your claim, just need to see it myself to confirm!

112. An Oregon architect strived for simplicity --
Edited on Tue Jun-07-05 04:51 PM by Radio_Lady
Robert Murase's story was in the "Homes and Gardens" section last week in the Portland Oregonian. I think he achieved it, at some expense.

Here's the story:

http://www.oregonlive.com/hg/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/homes_gardens/111770626962260.xml&coll=7

From there go to PHOTO GALLERIES -- Retreating into the background for slide show on this simple and interesting Japanese inspired home.

(Kinda makes me want to throw out all my stuff and start with bare walls again.)

I love this quote from the end of the article:

"...Murase often speaks of aiming for traditional Japanese qualities of wabi, an absence of ostentation with a sense of humility and melancholy, and of yugen, the undiscoverable unknown beyond the individual small self. Compared with his other work, the retreat seems almost scattered, bordering on the austere, the half-built or maybe the half-eroded. The entry road meanders in from the north, but the house is oriented for a western entry for better feng shui. As well, its L-shape divides the grounds into separate spaces to better enjoy the morning and afternoon sunlight and to avoid the prevailing winds.

"The idea is to have a series of courtyards that look outward from the house," he explains. "I want people to just flow through it. This site has such power, I don't want to do anything that will distract from it.

"When I pass away," he adds, offering a sense of the philosophy behind the aesthetic, "I just want to be forgotten. No big deal."

Yeah, me, too. When I go, I just want to blend with the wind and the sand and the water and the sky and the clouds.

It's nice when builders take the setting into account, enhancing the property rather than overpowering it as some McMansion builders do today.
