Hell's Kitchen is like Survivor in a restaurant, and Gordon Ramsay is like a mean Simon Cowell.
This is actually a fun show. A million times better than that NBC's The Restaurant, and one that maintains its intensity and unpredictability throughout the first ep. When Ramsay says that the contestants should be "prepared for anything and everything" he really means it: the restuarant opens up on the same day that the contestants arrive!
I worked in many kitchens for 12 years, and I really don't get some of Ramsay's rules. I mean, what's the point of getting a bunch of people - some of whom have never cooked in a restaurant in their lives - thrown into a cooking situation on their first night? Does he expect excellence? (Of course not; he expects good TV) And that rule about "if one thing is wrong in an order than you redo the whole order," even if the other stuff is ok? That's one of the craziest restaurant rules I've ever seen. Ramsay is just dead wrong about that."
