37. OK lets get this straight right now
Fried chicken IS a breakfast food.

Thank you for your comment.

Years ago, just how many years is not exactly relavent but it is more than a lot of DUers have been around, my third grade teacher asked us to name some breakfast foods. Most kids said things like bacon, eggs, toast, etc.

Having just that morning had the normal breakfst we had when all my mom's folks came - a huge spread - of eggs, bacon, pork chops, fried chicken and gravy, I responded "fried chicken."

I promptly had my hand slapped with a ruler.

I was too embarrassed to mention it to her then, but years later when I told me mother she said she would have given that teacher a piece of her mind. She was a pistol!

BTW I'm from North Texas (God's side of the red river) but thereare a lot of good folks in Sooner country too.

For saying fried chicken is a breakfast food? That teacher sounds like a very rigid thinker. ANYTHING is a breakfast food. Any food you eat for breakfast counts as a breakfast food. I never did understand the strict idea of certain foods only being for breakfast, certain foods for lunch, and certain foods for supper.

At the old Lutheran church basement suppers, you could count on ham buns and jello salads.

My Norwegian Lutheran grandmother, bless her, considered ketchup too "spicy."

I like fried chicken, but I've never been crazy about KFC, so I've been reluctant to try other fast food fried chicken.

It's pretty messy to make fried chicken, so I don't do it that often. I do use a cast iron frying pan, though, and I didn't know until recently that that's the Southern way. Cast iron is great for fried chicken, and it's great for bacon too.

52. Mmm. skip the chicken, I'll take the biscuits & gravy
I'm a total Northerner, so I've come late to Southern delights like grits, biscuits & gravy. But we were freezing our asses off last year after a dawn hike around the rim of the Grand Canyon. I was WAY underdressed and shivering when we finally made it back to the restaurant at the Bright Angel.

I was saved by the most amazingly delicious hot biscuits and gravy, a food experience I keep trying to reproduce whenever I travel South, much to the detriment of my waistline.

Even though there's lots of good food in Philadelphia, good fried chicken is tough to find.

At least it's direct. Puff Daddy's mom runs a fried chicken joint here on Flatbush, so I only have to go 3 stops:

"Anyway, word is, the BBQ is outrageously good. Maggie says it's kickass. So there you go. The Combs are straight-up Midas all the way. Gold, gold, gold."

That explains the Vote or Die poster in the window. You would think Puffy's mom would be more blingy, good for her for keeping it real in there.
