Man says Bible tells of oil in israel -- fundies finance drilling
More than 20 years ago, John Brown was mesmerized by an evangelical preacher's theory that the Bible hinted at a major oil field deep beneath Israel.

Now, with unshakable faith and millions of dollars from American Evangelicals, Brown is leading an exploration that he says he hopes will uncover a reservoir of oil in a New Jersey-size country that produces 80 barrels of oil a day.

3. BUT... BUT...he says....
"I prayed and asked God for oil for Israel. In my heart, I knew the answer was yes."

That's been good for $7 MILLION in fundie funds so far!

LOL -- God is great.

2. So now they're going to tear up Isreal for more oil?!
The more earth they destroy means the sooner none of us will be able to exist anyway. Us or them.

4. And, Lord, I have been praying, too
I believe there is oil in my backyard in Connecticut, and for only half that $7 million (plus a mere 1% of annual revenues in perpetuity if found) you can have buy my property from me to drill there.

12. I had oil in my backyard in Connecticut.
Really!! I lived in Bridgeport.

Though I think it came from the motors dumped in the yard next door!

6. If there is oil, we'll just have to invade Israel
After all, there are gross violations of human rights there every day, just like in Saddam's Iraq. Palestineans are put in concentration camps/fenced in ghettos, just like jews in Nazi Germany.

13. *This* is His Proof Text?
Brown, 65, quotes a passage from Genesis in which Jacob tells Joseph that God will give him "blessings of the deep that couches beneath," which he believes refers to oil.

The passage says that the blessings will be on "the head of Joseph," which Brown reads as the geographic site in ancient Israel occupied by the tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim, Joseph's sons. Maanit falls within that area.
I hate to be the one to tell him this, but that "blessings on the head of" phrase does NOT refer to a geographical location. It just means God will bless Joseph.

I thought he might be referring to the passage discussing the fate of the twelve tribes which says: "Let Asher dip his toe in oil." Of course, that was an idiom, too, and had nothing to do with petroleum. But at least it refers specifically to oil and to a specific geography, namely the area in North Israel originally given to the tribe of Asher.
