2. Neil Finn. Hands down.
No offense, because I really like the Eurythmics, but Annie Lennox seems as pompous as Sting in the interviews I've seen. So I wouldn't necessarily see her as being down-to-earth. But I could be wrong.

4. I gave them that only because they donated ALL the proceeds
from their last concert tour to Amnesty International and Greenpeace.

5. I'm going to have to get off your list and go with the Grateful Dead
Edited on Tue Jun-07-05 03:58 PM by ET Awful
You can't get more down to Earth than the Dead, and if you look at how much good the Rex Foundation did over the years (along with other charities they gave to), they're a very generous group of guys :).

Between 1984 and 2003, the Rex Foundation gave $ 7,919,761 to charity. Not bad for a foundation created by a bunch of hippies :). Info from: http://www.rexfoundation.org/

The recipients of their grants ranged from small town fire departments to September 11 Families for a Peaceful Tomorrow.

7. The Dead
As much as I didn't like them, I'd also say The Grateful Dead. They were very giving and quite down to earth.

9. Not to be redundant, but I've got to go with the Clash.
They would let fans (read "fans" not groupies) backstage to meet them after their concerts. They let fans sleep on the floor of their hotel room and let them into their concerts when they didn't have tickets. Joe would much rather spend time with fans than with journalists.

They put a guy on their payroll so he wouldn't enlist in the army. I could go on, but you get the point. :)

16. Robert Pollard of Guided by Voices.
There is not an ounce of phony-assed poseurism in Mr. Pollard's whole body. Every time I've spoken to the guy, it's like shooting the shit with the coolest gym teacher (who secretly used to get high after phys ed class behind the bleachers with his favorite students) you never had.

When Bob does his high kicks and mike twirls on stage, it's because of his genuine enthusiasm, not becuase he's trying to get a blowjob.

17. Grateful Dead.
They allow taping, they have their own charitable foundation, and they always, always, always took care of their fans by keeping ticket prices down at a reasonable level.
