Mini biography: Anna Maria Italiano was born 1931 in the Bronx, New York. She made her cinema debut in 1952 in Don't Bother to Knock (1952). In the fifties she made a lot of movies as a supporting actress until she became a star with The Miracle Worker (1962), directed by Arthur Penn, for which she won an Academy Award. The sixties in general were her best years: The Pumpkin Eater (1964) directed by Jack Clayton, 7 Women (1966) directed by John Ford and The Graduate (1967) directed by Mike Nichols. It's almost a footnote that she won Best Actress for that amazing role. Everyone still talks about Mrs. Robinson, but she was INCREDIBLE in "The Miracle Worker."

She had many of those, but this was the final one.

We just saw her in the movie "Up at the Villa" made in 2000. She was wonderful as "Princess San Ferdinando" -- an over the top performance along with Kristen Scott Thomas and Sean Penn.

I see she died from cancer. I didn't know anything about it. Seventy three -- seems awfully young to me now that I'm 66. I feel sorry for Mel -- they were certainly an interesting couple.

When lovers exchange the word "forever" -- it doesn't really mean forever -- I'm sad now.
