There is a portion of a street in my town that is almost totally gay oriented; a hotel, clubs, cafes, shops, etc. . . . There may be possibly be other areas, too.

I don't travel much to other cities. Is this common? It's cool.

4. In midsize and large cities yes
Unless a city is like San Francisco or New York, and even they have LGBT areas they just also have LGBT presence in other places, a city often has a gay oriented area. In Chicago its boystown. In Cleveland it is Lakewood and the northwest side of Cleveland. In Columbus it is Germantown. In Pittsburg it is Oakland. In the triangle it is the area around Duke Univeristy.

21. Oh man, you ain't kidding...
I went there once a couple of years ago, with my then-roomate and a gay friend. I had only been in Chicago for maybe a few months at the most, and before then I hadn't really experienced anything outside of the south Florida swamps. Boystown was, at the time, the single most bizzare thing that I had ever seen. Huge, phallic, rainbow-colored sculptures, my crazy-ass roomate, the shops (oh god, the shops - the only time I've ever heard a gay man refer to another gay man by "girl")... absolutely priceless. :D

(My then-roomate and I are both hetero... but does it really matter?)

52. Ya know what I hate?
Gay-acting straight guys.

It seems to be a trend lately for straight guys to dress all spiffy and be...well...stereotypically gay looking & sounding! Tight clothes and all...

As if it wasn't hard enough already to spot our people, now it's double tough.

48. Gay bars in the Philly gayborhood hosted Dean Meetups
in early days when no one else would.

Great settings for them, because the meeting would be at 7:00 or 7:30, and not a patron in site yet so we didn't interfere with business, but they were big enough to accomodate us, and could serve beer.

Later meetings moved to "straight" bars to accomodate those who were "squeamish" about going to a gay bar at any time, and it was a headache, because we had to compete with the loud, smokey "happy hour" crowds. God I'd like to smack people upside the head sometimes.

22. Hi there, Floogeldy!
I don't believe that there is a section in my little town, but Long Beach, to the south, has a large gay neighborhood...and right now I am remembering the name: Pacific Shores...Nice, quiet place, well kept up homes. I have no idea if Long Beach has shopping areas that are focussed on the gay population.

And driver8 correctly pointed out that West Hollywood has a large gay population as well...

Many bars & gay-oriented businesses. The Pride Parade takes place there--at night, to avoid Houston's daytime heat.

But not everyone in the Montrose is gay. And not everyone in other neighborhoods is straight, by any means.

43. I lived there years ago.
In "the old days" Hippies could rent fine old homes for a song. Some of the homes are still fine. Others have been torn down for unbeautiful development. But it's still a place for free spirits. Home of the Menil collection & close to the rest of the museums.

The Greater Heights area is also pretty fine.

Edited on Wed Jun-08-05 09:34 AM by Bluzmann57
There are three bars and a restaurant which cater to homosexuals, primarily. They are on Second Street, right at the foot of the Centennial Bridge, which crosses the Mississippi River into Illinois. The restaurant has very good food. Yes, I have eaten there before and yes I am straight. The thing about the "Rainbow District", as it is known is that the owners of the establishments have worked hard to fix up the area where at one time prostitution and drug dealing were prevalent. The city leaders do not bother the area, and in fact, a few have said that it is much appreciated. Believe me, the area was really bad for a while. Now it sweems to be busy a lot of the time and there are not many police calls down there, according to the police department.

In Milwaukee -- Brady Street has the most gay-friendly non-entertainment businesses, I'd say, but Walker's Point (a historically Mexican neighborhood) has by far the greatest concentration of gay bars.
