LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - At age 18, actress Lindsay Lohan says she has had enough of fame -- especially the "hurtful" media coverage that has painted her as an incessant party girl.
Lohan, who became one of the country's leading actresses under the age of 20 with her star turn in "Mean Girls," says all she wants is for fans and Hollywood to take her seriously.
Her dream now, she said in an interview to promote her new movie "Herbie: Fully Loaded," is to land a dramatic role and perhaps get a chance to reprise Ann-Margret's turn as an sexy juvenile delinquent in the 1964 movie "Kitten With a Whip."
Lohan has been a tabloid goddess with the papers full of stories about her breakup with actor Wilmer Valderrama, her hospitalization for exhaustion, and her parents' contentious divorce, which included her father, Michael, jailed and barred from contacting his children.
Lohan said that the intense media scrutiny that followed her hit film "Mean Girls" has been "really overwhelming."
She said tabloids failed to report that she is no longer a fixture of the club scene in New York and Los Angeles.
"I kind of got over it really fast but they continued to say I still do it. I just don't want people to think that I'm not focused and that I'm in this for the wrong reasons," she said, adding that some of the media coverage had been hurtful.
Lohan named as her own idol another denizen of the media spotlight: Marilyn Monroe.
