Calling DU doctors and nurses.
I think I'm having a reaction to the antibiotic Macrodantin. I've called the doctor and he hasn't called back yet. I'm having fever and chills and aching all over, and my hands and feet are itching.

Should I be worried? The Information sheet the pharmacist gave me says in capital letters CALL YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience fever, chills, rash, cough, difficulty breathing...

I don't have difficulty breathing or cough, but I have all the other stuff. Now I'm afraid I'll get difficulty breathing!

:scared:

1. In my lay opinion
just because you have some of the allergic reactions doesn't by any means mean that you'll have ALL of them.

2. On the other hand....
"Breathing disorders have occurred in people taking nitrofurantoin. The drug can cause inflammation of the lungs marked by coughing, difficulty breathing, and wheezing. It has also been known to cause pulmonary fibrosis (an abnormal increase in fibrous tissue of the lungs). This condition can develop gradually without symptoms and can be fatal. An allergic reaction to this drug is also possible and may occur without warning."

4. Thanks
I think you're right. I haven't noticed any problems with the breathing. But this fever is making me feel like crap.

3. You may be having symptoms related to
the reason you were placed on Macrodantin in the first place...OR....

The Macrodantin may not be effective or it could be a reaction brewing.

Go to the ER if you can't get into the physicians office.....
Run Forest, RUN......

5. any rash, hives or red bumps?
don't worry - you're not having anaphylaxis, or you would have stopped breathing already.

Initial allergic reaction to antibiotics is usually rash / chills, etc. If you have an all-over rash, stop taking the antibiotic (don't take any more doses), and make absolutely sure you talk to your doctor to get you flipped onto a new antibiotic. A rash in and of itself is a warning, not a sign that you're dying.

If your doctor tells you it's an allergic reaction though, a subsequent dose in a couple of months could be dangerous.

Finally - if you start having a real sensation of pressure around your neck, get to an emergency room. This will not be like "oh it might be" - you will definitely know; you'll feel like you have a thirty pound weight squeezing your throat.
