Poll question: Is Your Home Alarmed?

We're a bit paranoid, I guess...

We have a transmitter on every door and window in the house. There's even a transmitter on the outdoor access panel leading to the crawl-space underneath our house.

At night, our front-, side-, and back-yards are bright enough to easily read a newspaper. We have are a total of 9 extra-bright fluorescent floodlights that are controlled by electric eyes.

The only thing missing are big "NO TRESPASSING" signs and fake "BEWARE OF ATTACK DOG" signs. Maybe I should get a shotgun too and post a sign that says "BEWARE OF OWNER".

... but considering how BRIGHT the nighttime sky is around the DC area already, it's hardly worth worrying about.

We just take our telescope out of the area whenever we want to look at the stars.

Seriously, the issue is not so much intrusion detection - but working, effective, smoke - heat - carbon monoxide - natural gas detectors.

The fumes will kill you before the heat.

10. I have the best kind of alarm system, four dogs with big barks.

I have scoffed at alarm systems ever since I found out how easy they are to bypass during my misspent youth. A pair of wire snippers, a few extra strands of wire, possibly a nine volt battery, and voila, alarm system begone. If you're quick and practiced, it only takes about five minutes.

Dogs on the other hand can only be disabled in noisy and messly ways, which usually alerts the occupants that somebody is breaking in. Besides an alarm system cannot actively resist an intruder the way a dog does.

And having had a misspent education during my misspent youth, I guarantee you that a burglar will pass on a home, even if the front door is wide open, that has a big dog inside. They'll move on to the house next door that is equipped with an alarm system.

If you want an effective alarm system, get a big dog. The only deterant those electronic systems provide is to amatuers and teen vandals. Pros go right by them, snickering all the way.

i do have some dangerous neighbors; in that drunken, resentment-harboring, confederate way. my doggies all have a distinctive "alert" bark that differs from their normal communicating-w/-neighbor-dogs bark, or annoy-the-harmless-trespassing-varmint bark. the klan-wannabees are all terrified of my nonpacifist liberal ass, though, so no real problem.

13. Yes, our house is alarmed...When we built it 3 years ago, it was easy.

Since we have a 2 story home, we have motion sensors on each floor. Every downstairs window and door has an alarm. And so do most of the ones upstairs. Plus our under the house access has a door alarm. As to the problem of people disarming it, we dealt with that as well. The alarm system is located far from the house's entrance, and all the wires leading into the house are underground. We feel that it is nearly impenetrable. We've never had a break-in. This is a pretty nice neighborhood...I don't think anyone here has been broken into. But we figured, as long as we were building, what the heck!

We haven't regretted it all...

... I want to know that someone has come in the house so that I can GET OUT of the house. Having an alarm doesn't keep them out... but knowing that it will (maybe) scare them off and (definitely) wake me up is comforting.

You articulated much more clearly than I did why we have our alarm. We set ours every night for the exact same reasons that you do! Thanks for clarifying what I was trying to say...

I am "'hood adjacent' here in los angeles, and installed a wazoo system in my house when I moved in...

But I've long forgotten the code and never had the service activated.

I have motion detector lights along the sides and bouganvilla in bloom along every other access point on the perimeter.

Mouthy dogs too.

Never a lick of trouble.

my parents and my family probably locked our doors no more than a couple of months.the only time is when we were both on vaction or when my mom was in the hospital i don`t know where my front door key is....
