Do any of you believe in what tarot cards say in a reading?
Edited on Wed Jun-08-05 01:02 PM by bugslsu9
And if so, can you give me an instance where they really were accurate? I have my reasons for asking, but I cannot right now. If you really need to know, pm me and I can tell you, I just do not want it public.

2. As do ATM Cards, Dance Cards, Credit Cards, and Andrew Cards
Do any of them have any supernatural properties whatsoever?

That'd be a NO.

7. I don't know about the ATM cards, being technologically deficient
I'm pretty sure elves live in there and dole out the dough. Tarot cards, however, have no "magic"

Seriously, no. I like tarot and my last roommate really believed in it, but come on. A planet 80 million miles away will make your day bad because its in the house of pickles and you were born when Mercury was retrograde in the house of Fairy Dust?

Must be those durned eather fluxuations!

5. Well...I can tell you about why I stopped doing readings...
A couple of nights before we invaded in the Gulf War I did a general reading for the planet. Every card I pulled had a meaning related to war. I don't know if it was me influencing the cards because I knew what was coming or if it was the cards themselves telling me what the universe knew. But it freaked me out and I have done maybe 2 readings since then and both were for fun and not done seriously.

11. I also freaked myself out
I did a reading for a guy at work many years ago and the cards and my interpretation were apparently dead on.

He had a lot of issues that I didn't really want to be privy to as a casual acquaintance and a co-worker.

I don't know if I just somehow observed through subtle details what the guy's personal life was like or what (I am very observant and have a good memory) but I got all weirded out by the experience and swore off the cards!

Real, fake, or otherwise it's not for yours truly!

16. My last reading was 10 years ago...
I'd done some readings for friends, and had some very spooky results. My last reading on myself, job loss kept coming up. The next day I got fired. Very traumatic. I think I'm ready to pick them up again now though, for many years I wasn't in the right frame of mind.

9. I used to give readings a LONG time ago
I was younger when I was into all that and am a little more skeptical now.

Let me put it to you this way...if you had a really depressing reading take it with a grain of salt and don't let it freak you out!

10. No, it was definately not depressing
I had 2 readings done, and, even though I asked 2 different, but somewhat related questions, both readings gave the same answer.

14. Hey... if it was a positive reading then take it as total truth lol
It never hurts to focus on the positive (esp in this depressing climate!)

I think there are some mysteries of the human brain that we haven't uncovered yet and I am not a total disbeliever in psychics or whatever you want to call them (putting on flame suit because I know someone will rip me a new one for being a nut!)

12. tarot cards
Edited on Wed Jun-08-05 01:18 PM by stellanoir
are 78 symbolic representations of events that occur to all of us at various times. The order in which they're presented can present a picture as vast as life itself.

I prefer to refer to them as flashcards from the unconscious.

How aptly they apply depends largely on one's dynamic with the reader and their fundamental ethics and articulance.

I have found that more often than not, they are on target. But there are sometimes they miss the mark entirely.

Of course then there are the old school curse ladies, who say everyone has a curse on them and that they will require a bunch of hundred dollar candles to dispell. That is horseshit.

IMHO

Moral of the story is always keep your BS detector set to maximum stun.

21. I Almost Think of It as Premodern Psychotherapy
One of the themes that recurs in http://www.learntarot.com/ is that the pictures represent the rhythms of light and darkness, gain and loss in our lives. It forces you to think about your life in certain ways that I personally think are very helpful.

But the professional readers? They'll swindle you if you give them an inch.

24. I'm a pro
and I don't swindle anyone. That's not to say that others don't.

I help mostly kids, high school and college age. They just need some common sense and presented to them within the eccentric fringe, they tell me everything. They also know that the info they divulge will never end up on their permanant records or get basck to their parents. If I didn't feel as though I was providing a viable and valuable service, I wouldn't be pulling an all nighter to help them.

27. Sorry About That, StellaNoir,
I didn't know anyone here was a pro. Just an offhand comment -- I was thinking of the gypsy subculture.

So you provide tarot readings to adolescents as a form of personal help? That's very interesting. I bet that avoids all sorts of obstacles with other forms of counseling.

29. I agree with the flashcard concept...
I have worked with tarot cards for many years now and find that they act as a tool for helping me to understand myself and/or clarify a situation. I have found them to be very useful in my life.

To give an example: I was in the process of buying a used vehicle many years back. It was coming down to two cars -- one I would have to drive back from Lake Tahoe, and another that was closer to home down in San Mateo. I did two readings on each of the cars, and the cards indicated very strongly that the Tahoe car would be nothing but trouble for me -- if I remember correctly the outcome card was one of the high swords. The other reading was all good, nothing to indicate any kind of problems.

Silly me, I was too flipped out about driving the car back from Tahoe that I went with the local car instead.

And that poor car -- which I evetually named The Brown Turd -- was nothing but a huge pain in the ass for me from the get go. Breaking down just about every other week, $1000s down the drain in repairs.

I tend not to ignore the cards these days. :)

13. I've had one.
I was given a gift of one for my birthday a few months ago. It was amazingly good. She saw that I was having a career path change and said it would go well and I'd advance (too soon for that, but so far so good). She said I was a person with amazing strength and love that could do anything I wanted to in life though I have a lot to balance (true). She saw my children and how children are otherwise involved in my life. She saw this particular relationship I have (which I didn't bring up) and said something like, "It's his reasons that things are how they are, but he cares for you very much and there will be a future somehow here. She told me that my main problem was actually that I get too worried about money (true), but not to worry because my needs will be met.

I guess everything she said was either true or the truth is possible down the road. I take it all with a big grain of salt though. However, when you think about it, is it any stranger than that of mainstream, organized religion?

17. I'm split because of the 50/50 track record
I had my tarot cards read once and the woman was confident enough to tape record the session. She was remarkably accurate about approximately 50% of the information, but she missed the boat by a country mile when she said I'd have 3 children in rapid succession. I'm infertile. It took 7 years, 3 specialists, 7 ART cycles, and $50,000 to have my son. That was a pretty significant miss in my book. :eyes:

...there any miscarriages?

My sister had her cards read. She was told she had three boys. She had two. But, she did miscarry, it was a boy, and nobody knew about it except her.

32. No...
No miscarriages. We had fertilization issues that required an IVF/ICSI procedure to achieve pregnancy. The tarot reader told me two boys and a girl, but I have just the one boy. I do have a twin sister though with three children (all boys), so maybe the reader was getting some twin static during my session. :)

18. Almost Every Time I Have Done a Tarot Reading,
there has been something very arresting in the results. I can't say I believe in the tarot wholeheartedly, but I'm absolutely fascinated with it.

The site I used as a guide is http://www.learntarot.com/ One of the helpful things about the site is that the author conveys the meaning of each card in very abstract ways (rather than associating it with a specific prediction). She also emphasizes the personal response to each card, including what story the pictures suggest to you. These two thing allow you to tap your subconscious and make for more personal and meaningful interpretations.

One experience I had was doing a reading for an ex-girlfriend several years ago. Her immediate family had been alcoholic, including an an abusive mother. When she was a teenager, she formed a suicide pact with a friend and literally had a gun to her head before stopping.

For some reason, I was using this strange post-modern deck (the PoMo tarot) which had different names for the trumps and different suits (dollar bills, guns, TV sets, and bottles).

Her reading included: (1) a figure with a gun to his head, (2) a threatening-looking "Mom", (2) multiple guns and whiskey bottles, and for the final position (which indicated the direction of the relationship), the three of guns. This corresponded to the three of swords, the interpretation of which is heartbreak.

I tried to downplay this, saying it would probably change over time, but the relationship ended a short while later.

On the other hand, for my current girlfriend the Chariot came up in the first position, which suits her dead on.

22. Tarot
Yes, I believe that tarot cards can give accurate information. About 9 years ago I was at a full moon circle and there was a new face in the crowd. He was a very interesting man. I really liked him and he seemed to like me and we got on like a house afire, as the saying goes - problem was he was married, a captain in the Navy and had kids. My personal rules include "no dating married men, especially married men in the military with kids". Anyway, about the same time I also struck up a conversation with a guy at our local supermarket about history. We had a great conversation and any time I went in to shop and he was on the front end, I got in his line so we could talk.

As it happened, I needed to have some surgery and was a bit nervous. So I went to a tarot reader at one of the local new age shops. I was told the surgery would be fine, and that I had met the man I would marry and described him. I could only think of the Navy guy and protested that he was married. The tarot reader kept telling me that he was not and I should give him a chance. I thought long and hard about things and decided to keep my rules in place and so figured I would not marry.

The upshot - it turned out the tarot reader had picked up on the guy at the grocery store who was similar in appearance to the Navy guy. Grey hair, shortish stocky build, Northern European background, interested in history and the military, military background, had kids - but one of the big differences was that the grocery store guy was divorced whereas the Navy guy was not and the last I heard from him, about a year ago, was still with his wife and had gone back to the Catholic church to make her happy. The grocery store guy and I have been married for 6 and a half years now and have a daughter who will be 3 in June. The last time the Navy guy contacted me, he acted like he had not heard about the marriage (I had told him several times that I was married, the full moon circle folks had mentioned it and at one he had met my husband), my kid or that I had moved on and wanted to get together one evening after work. (I should also say that another reading told me that we would be successful in adopting our daughter at a time when it looked decidedly like we would not.)

So, yes, I feel that tarot can indeed be accurate, however, I should go on and say that I don't have readings for every thing that comes up. Your mileage may vary. Good luck.

23. Only important things
I never do it, but was up late, and decided to do it at random. I asked my question, and got a response that basically told me that, not only was I going to do it, but it would not be under my control, meaning, there was nothing I could do to make it happen, it just would. Keep in mind, this is a positive outcome. So, I had a second reading done about the opposite option, and it told me the same thing, that option 2 was not "in the cards", no pun intended.

and go with the flow. See what develops. I hope that the outcome is as positive for you as the reading seems to indicate it will be!

25. One reading I did was bang on
for my niece, who had met a guy in a club the night before. I got a terrible feeling from the cards that came up, and said he was bad news, to proceed cautiously. She didn't - had 2 kids with him, and a number of restraining orders. She eventually broke free from him, after about 9 years.

I don't use it as a predictive tool as much as trying to understand what's happening at the moment...I'd say at least 60% of the time it's bang on.

But no tall, dark, handsome strangers.

once.

I do read them for friends, for fun. I'm actually pretty good at reading them for people I know really well, but that's more of a psychology thing than anything else.
