I had a weird encounter with the police this morning
My phone rang early this morning. The building intercom system is a piece of crap, but I did make out the word police.

I went down to let them in.

Purolater had left a note on the front door when they attempted to deliver something. They handed me the note, and said, "That's you right?"

So far, no problem. They had buzzed my apartment, and my apartment number was on the note. Then they said, "You had your identity stolen, right?" (I had.)

How did they know? What are they saying about me at the precinct.

BTW, they weren't here to see me.

4. They came here because someone in the building had complained
about vagrants sleeping in our parking area. (Long story)

But they randomly buzzed my apartment to be let in. (They were looking for the manager, but we don't have an on-site manager.)

They knew my name and that I had been the victim of identity theft.

6. I just think that it's strange that cops who I have had no dealings with
would know my name, and that I had been the victim of a crime.

It's not like this is Mayberry. There are lots of crime victims here.

8. Your phone rings over the building intercom system?
Maybe you were talking to a friend on the phone about your identity theft and everybody in the building heard you. One of your neighbors told his cop friend, who was coincidentally coming back today to visit your neighbor again, but in a neighborly way buzzed you in order to drop off the Purolator note.

Did I figure it out? :)

10. Don't police stations keep a log of crimes in the precinct?
I worked as a civilian in a police station as an undergrad, and the officers there were supposed to keep up with the log of all the recent criminal activity. Perhaps your name and/or crime was a bit distinctive, and so stuck in their minds?

15. I think this is probably what happened
You'd be surprised what cops know about all the criminal stuff that's going on in their precincts. They are supposed to keep their eyes open about all of the cases that are in the works, not just their own.

So they probably just heard about the identity theft through the briefing, and they remembered the name.
