I admit the 55,000 purged voters were probebly the most egregrious single violation of Election 2000. But I believe the more lasting violation, the one that will harm democracy most in the long term, was the fact that hand recounts were challenged at all.
It may not have made as big a difference in Election 2000. Even if all counties had been hand recounted, it still would have been close (I think Gore would have won if it were done fairly, but it still would have been close).
BUT the challenges (and denigration) of the process of hand-counting votes, and by extension of paper ballots at all, has made us move away from a system of voting that we have wisely stuck with for over 200 years. There NEEDS to be a paper trail, so that hand recounts can be used to verify machine-tabulated vote totals, when necessary! And hand recounts ARE valid when done properly, which is all the Gore campaign was ever trying to do, and strictly according to Florida Law (as well as the norm for most if not all states, including Texas, based on legislation that Bush himself signed as Governor).
Gimme your chads... hanging, dimpled, pregnant, and otherwise! Gimme absentee ballots! Gimme anything that can be verified. Toss those BBV machines into the nearest dumpster!!
