I Just Lost My Job
I was on a temporary assignment with a company, I didn't really like the job very much...the actual work was okay, but the corporate culture sucked, and I wasn't happy there. I had been looking for other jobs for some time now, but with no success.

I got the call this morning that I needn't report in, the company was ending my assignment. When I asked why, the only thing I was told was a very generic "it just isn't working out." Nothing more, nothing less.

A bunch of other people got let go yesterday...and a whole slew of new temps just got in the door yesterday, and so I suspect it was just my turn to go through the revolving door this company has in place.

The way this place works is, they keep you a temp forever, they never hire anyone..or hardly ever, anyway. This way, they do not have to pay things like raises, paid holidays, paid sick days, vacations, 401k's...you know, the things an employee of my caliber and skills comes to expect from a job. I believe they installed the revolving door so that the natives wouldn't get restless and demand these sorts of things.

Anyway, they never train you on new stuff...they just hand you something you've never seen or done before...and a little booklet, and say "train yourself." Then they act all insulted, or like it's an imposition if you have a question. and they count your mistakes against you...and three mistakes, however long it takes you to make them, be it 2 days, two months, or 2 years...and you are out the door.

No amount of good, over any length of time, undoes any of the mistakes. So you could be super-employee...but, three mistakes and it's "you made three mistakes, you bad girl, you..." and you're out the door. So this is the corporate culture I was dealing with.

Well, I took off Monday this week because of a bad stomach-ache...it was in fact so bad I could not even sit up. But I went into work again on Tuesday. And Monday was not a paid sick day. I, of course, called the agency, and, per the company's request, also called them, four hours before my scheduled start time.

On Tuesday, they gave me one of those projects I mentioned before. There were a number of problems with the spreadsheet, and I didn't discover them until I was into the work, and I discovered them one at a time, and had to get up from my desk to ask the guy who'd given me the project how I ought to handle this-and-such situation. every time, it was justified.

Nevertheless, the big boss had said to me, "Angela, aren't you out of your desk a lot tonight?" I explained I had questions, and needed to resolve them through the project manager. Later, when I had this boss in private, I asked him, quote, "Sir, no disrespect, but, is my production, or quality of work in some way lacking that my being briefly out of my seat would be a concern?" He said no, just that my being out of my seat was "distracting." I didn't bother to point out to him the many other things including goofing-off employees that were far more disctracting...I merely said I was sorry, but that I had questions, and that, since I was in an isolated section of the building, no one ever saw my flag when I raised it. (we had little flags at our desks we would raise if we had problems.)

I then asked him, in light of that, how would he like me to handle questions. Again, not in any disrespectful manner, just as in...okay, look, I want to work with you...so how would you like me to handle situation X in the future? He told me I should ask my Senior Rep, sitting in my area (one way to incur her wrath was to ask her ANYTHING) and if she could not answer, then have HER get up to get the project manager FOR me. Well, I can imagine what woulda happened first time I ever asked her to do THAT...

Anyway, I never did get a chance to find out. Because I went in to work yesterday, had a fairly productive day, no questions, no nothing...I even ended up staying late last night to finish up on a project (it was only ten minutes, but I still stayed late.)

And now, this morning, I get the phone call that my assignment had ended, and the only given reason is "it just wasn't working out." Nothing specific...which tells me I didn't do something that was all THAT bad...after all, if I had, you'd think they would say something.

All's I wish to ascertain, of course, is...does this poinson my name with that particular temp agency? And does this, in any way, impede my ability to collect unemployment? I can't imagine, based on what I was told, that the answer to either question was "yes" and I cannot think of anything I did that would justify a termination. Apparently, neither can they.

As I say, I suspect it was simply my turn to go the other way through the revolving door this company has set up to keep the natives from getting restless.

Well, anyway...bottom line is, I'm not really too disappointed about the job, because I know what I'm worth, and I believe I am worth better than that place, anyway. The only thing that sucks is now I have a lack of income. But, since I live at home, this is less problematic than it could be. anyway, the agency said they would try and get some more detail from the company for me...and in the meantime, would I mind making a 20-mile drive down to their office to turn in my company badge? I told them I would return the badge within the next couple days, when I was in the area, and they said that would be fine.

C'est la vie! Que sera sera...

3. Sorry for your loss
But, it sounds like you'll probably be better off in the long run. As far as your reputation with the temp agency is concerned, I wouldn't worry about it. The employer probably already has a long established track record with them. And not a good one.

Good luck, and hope you find a job soon.

4. I would go on in and speak directly with your temp agency contact...
It's a good idea to develop a personal relationship with those people. Do it on the guise that you're giving them a heads-up on the employer, in the nicest possible way. Say nice things about the place, but that it's a tough place to work for, regardless.

I wouldn't take it personally. Not everyone meshes well with every situation. Kinda like dating; they just weren't into you.

5. good god, mermaid-- that sound's like an AWFUL place to work....
Seriously. That amounts to bald-faced wage slavery. Absolutely Dickensonian. Best of luck finding something else, but especially something BETTER!

11. Oh, It Was WORSE Than Awful...
I had to work Memorial Day this year, and at straight pay. No holiday pay, no time and a half...no nothing. I, of course, had put in a request for the Fourth of July off (they will be open on July 4) and it isn't like this is an ESSENTIAL business that couldn't afford to close its doors for a day, even without pay. It's not like we were cops or paramedics or firefighters....we processed orders that people placed on the web for cellular telephones. I won't mention the name of the cell company for whom we processed them (cough) Cingular (cough) but the corporate culture at that place sucked.

I mean...the way that they basically turned all of us into indentured servants, or wage slaves...was absolutely incredible. I mean...they have it such that everything is pro- the comapny and anti- the employee.

Absolutely unbelieveable. And I haven't been treated like that in a job ever...in fact, last time I got treated the way this place treated it's people was when I was in third grade.

Well, again, I KNOW I am better than that...and that I am worth more than that.

I'm pretty convinced this is just a situation of "we don't like you, you don't play ball the way we want you to...we know that you know we're exploiting you, and that you don't like it...so, goodbye."

Duh! I shoulda known I was supposed to remain, and ACT ignorant to the fact that we were being screwed every which way but loose...and I was supposed to enjoy it, too.

My honest opinion is that I got cut loose because they didn't like me being up and out of my seat, and they didn't like the fact I had a valid reason for it...and an answer for them other than simply "yes, Your Majesty."

Such is the way of temping, though: you breathe in the wrong way and you're bounced out. Here's hoping you find something better suited to your needs.

7. Bummer!
Hope something better is right around the corner for you. I used to work in a place that was cool, but eventually went to the "butt-in-chair" style of management you describe. The entire department was nuked a year later.

Hang in there!

15. I Wish I Did Escape
The problem is...Corporate America is becoming more and more like this place...and less and less what I remember when I first entered the work force...a time where the employee was still considered a valuable asset, rather than "expendable."

Granted, I began in the workforce in 1989, towards the end of the "valued employee" era, but I still witnessed some of it.

Nowadays, pretty much it is universal throughout Corporate america that the employee is not valued...after all you have to (shudder) actually PAY them...so they, of course, are a burden and a drain. don't those dumb employees know that they are supposed to be glad to work for free or next to nothing, and are supposed to worship the employer who screws them over?

Good God, how do we ever get back to the Corporate America I once knew??

We are in the Gilded Age all over again, where the Robber Barons rule with an iron fist, and the worker trembles to stand up to them...and, as a result, we are, as workers, in danger of losing EVERYTHING our fathers, mothers, grandfathers, and grandmothers fought to make sure we had.

We need some real worker power. What the fuck ever happened to UNIONS???

30. There is a rampant Plantation mentality
out there, agreed, but you can find something better. Just keep trying and focus on your strengths. I have been out of work for a while, precisely because I refuse to work under those conditions, so I understand how easy it is to feel hopeless.

But you have talents, interests and skills that might point you to a job you might not have considered, or you might decide to start your own business. Can you freelance the type of work you do?

I've had wonderful experiences with agencies but the last one I worked with was in 98. I can't imagine it now.

Anyhoo, don't give up. :headbang:

10. I see they've refined their techniques.

More than 40 years ago I did office work through temp agencies. I usually had no problems. But then I was sent to a place where I was given a manual and told to self-train, and the work was incredibly difficult. It involved stock inventory, but the data was sent over by hand and arrived at irregular intervals, making it impossible to keep up. So I figured out where it was coming from and would phone them when things got slow. Somehow I managed. After lunch the supervisor came over and said they were transferring me to another department. I said fine, so long as the pay was the same. Of course it wasn't, so I asked if there had been any problem with my work, and since there hadn't been, I insisted on phoning the agency and I told them I'd work out the day at the prior agreed-upon pay rate, no matter what job I was assigned, but that I wouldn't return.

That company had worked out their revolving door. They'd get people in at one pay rate, give them impossible tasks, and when they failed, switch them to a lower pay rate. It didn't work with me.

Mermaid, you recognized their revolving door, so don't think for a minute that anything they nit-picked about was your fault. If you weren't perfect, it was because they set it up so that you couldn't be.

They may not pay as much, but my experience with them has been that they are supportive places to work. You can gain some good experience and meet many different people. Not sure what is available in your area, but give it a try :-).

because she got sick. she went in 12 minutes late one day(diarrhia) and six minites the next day. they let her work till noon and then fired her for being late(she did call to let them know and they said ok). the ironic thing is if she would have took the time off and got a dr.'s excuse, they couldn't have done anything. but she went in because she felt she was needed. it is a big corp.

No, it won't hurt you with the temp agency. I've spent many years as a temp, and I'm fairly certain that the agencies know "it wasn't working out" could mean you combed your hair wrong one day, or simply that they are cycling through the next round of temps.

25. Yeah, But It Still Sucks
I'm basically a 34-year-old loser at life because I can no longer make it on my own. I was out on my own for ten years, and finally had to come back with my tail between my legs, finally and at last beaten by the world.

I'm half-considering saying fuck corporate America altogether...my whole point of coming home was to go to school anyway, so maybe I should just do that, and I'll get a goddamn paper route (they pay about 800 bucks a month up here) work my two-three hours a day, seven days a week, and then nothing to interfere with going to classes...and I get some walking around money.

To hell with it. Corporate America don't DESERVE me.

And when I get my paralegal certification in a couple of years, I can drop the route, and get a good job that actually DESERVES me...and go on to law school, eventually, hopefully, to become a labor lawyer, so I can spend the rest of my life sticking it back to the cocksuckers who've stuck it to me the first half of my life.

Have you never heard the old Klingon proverb that says "Revenge is a dish best served cold??" Well, I'll have my day, when I am a labor lawyer sticking it to the bastard corporations that are sucking the very life out of workers everywhere...and who sucked out the first half of my life...damned if they get a drop of the second half of my life!

I think I just may go ahead and do that with a paper route and to hell with Corporate America altogether. It's perfectly reasonable to have a paper route listed on a resume if your reason is that you decided you just needed a bit of pocket money while you were going to school, and needed a job that totally would not interfere with your ability to go to school.

So, my reason becomes, electing to drop out of the ungrateful corporate rat-race, and go back to school...working the paper route for needed pocket money. Screw. Who needs Corporate America anyway? Who needs their bullshit?

31. DO NOT feel bad about moving home
the way things are today, many people are in the same boat. It makes logical sense to share resources with others, and as things continue to decline, we will see more families and friends helping each other out this way.

I think your plan is great. Get back to school and find a spending money job doing something "honest." Just say no to the cubicle. It wants to eat you.

I've been stuck in the contract/temp work thing myself for a long time and they just don't need a reason for anything. In April I was laid off from a year long assigment after 3 months, budgetary reasons. I November I was laid off from a 4 month assigment after 3 weeks, with some mumbling about my not being qualified, but nothing specific. The permanent employees are shielded from the fear of unemployment because there are temp workers. It sucks.

The good news is that I've been seeing more perm jobs lately.
