(Glendale, Arizona)Valley awarded 2008 Super Bowl by NFL owners
CHICAGO — The 2008 Super Bowl is coming to the Valley.
NFL owners voted Thursday to award the game to Arizona. Other areas bidding for the game were Tampa, Fla., and Washington, D.C.

It will be the second Super Bowl to be played in the Valley. Super Bowl XXX was played at Sun Devil Stadium in 1996.

“It's a proud day. We should all celebrate,” said Cardinals vice president Michael Bidwill.

Arizona governor Janet Napolitano(D) pumped her fist in exultation when NFL commissoner Paul Tagliabue announced the owners' decision.

“Hosting the Super Bowl will be an opportunity for the world to see the new Arizona,” Napolitano said. “Now we have to go start getting ready.”

Tagliabue said the presentations from the three cities were “extraordinary,” but told officials from the Arizona Super Bowl Bid Committee, “You won convincingly.”

2. Well Oklahoma City doesn't have an NFL team
I am not sure how the process works but I think only NFL owners are awarded Super Bowls.

6. Because Bidwell the Cardinal's owner has a team in Arizona
Therefore that means Glendale has a football team(well a future one anyways). I think it alot of that has to do with public support and the fans plus the recent Monday Nighter at Sun Devil Stadium was fresh on there minds.

11. The people of Arizona voted in favor of the new stadium that is what they
mean by Fan Support. But three options were on the table, D.C., Tampa, and Glendale and Glendale happened to be approved "convincingly".

15. please, it's an easy decision
when you narrow it to those three.

First, enough Super Bowls have been in Miami, Florida's had their share.

Second, last year on Super Bowl Weekend, DC got 18 inches of snow. no one wants that for the rich folk.

So who's left? the suckers in Arizona who are paying for a building to be used 8 times a year.

16. It is going to be used much more then 8 time a year
Edited on Thu Oct-30-03 03:33 PM by VermontDem2004
Why do you think it has a field that rotates in and out of the stadium? It will be home for car shows, concerts, the Fiesta Bowl, dirt bike races, and so much more. They designed the stadium so it wont be just an empty building for 8 months out of the year. Plus FedEx Field and the Buccaneers stadium are both new stadiums.

21. uh huh
that's what they all say. and it cots, what, like 50,000 to change the field?

Will the cardinals be paying rent? who owns the stadium? who gets the revenue from concessions, parking, luxury boxes, naming rights?

how many minimun wage jobs do you really think this will create?

key difference. FedEx isn't that new. and it was privately financed. Jack Kent Cook built the thing with his own money. The NFL doesn't like that much. And the weather is intolerable, so it's irrelevant (Gillette field is newer than FedEx, after all.

FAn support don't mean shit, sorry to tell you. This was a reward to the team for suckering the people of AZ into building them a playground.

It is a retractable field, it rectracts in and out they designed the stadium specifically for that.

Will the cardinals be paying rent? who owns the stadium? who gets the revenue from concessions, parking, luxury boxes, naming rights?
The owner

how many minimun wage jobs do you really think this will create?
I'd imagine alot

FedEx field is fairly new, it was built in 1997. The rest of your post is based on nothing so I feel no need to respond, all I can say is the city needs the economic boom and sorry to tell you a democratic governor was excited about it.

the owner of what?
Edited on Thu Oct-30-03 04:00 PM by northzax
the stadium? is that the same person who owns the team?

why is it that you'll support using public funds to make money for that private corporation, but you bitch about government handouts to Haliburton and Bechtel?

FedEx creates about 500 jobs on a regular basis. And it sells everything out.

I'm sorry that a 'democratic' governot was so excited about a private corporation using public funds to create a two week economic uptick 6 years down the line.

Of course, I'm sure that all the public schools, subsidized housing and all other local government buildings are the best in the country, that's how they could spare the money to build a stadium, right?

and, were you aware thatevery time they move the roof in Bank One, it costs $50,000? think moving an entire field will be free?

Edited on Thu Oct-30-03 04:03 PM by VermontDem2004
Because I wanted the Fiesta Bowl and the Arizona Cardinals to stay in Tempe Arizona. But atleast I know the facts about the matter and studied alot about the issues but the Arizona Sports Authority and the Arizona Cardinals are paying roughly 80 percent of the Stadium costs while the public is only paying for about 20 percent. I said the democratic governor was excited about the Super Bowl comming to Arizona but you have your facts completely wrong about this matter, but 500 jobs and more are created on a regular basis for any team.

31. who do you think the AZ Tourism and Sports Authority is?
According to their Website, http://www.az-tsa.com/faqs.htm#where%20does%20the%20TSA%20derive%20its%20funding funding for the Authority comes from a tax surchage on Hotels and Car Rentals in Maricopa County. (roughly $7 million/year) In addition, it collects all the state income tax from employees of the Cardinals and from anyone performing in the stadium. By their own estimates, that's about $15 million/year. plus tax on concessions and the like (about $1 mill/year)

Frankly, it's the right of the People of Arizona to tax themselves and remove revenue from state coffers to help a corporation make more money, I just don't see why people are celebrating this decision.

32. I know who they are
And I am well aware how they are funded, even without a stadium they are still going to be funded that way. But they are not relying on taxpayers to pay for 50% of the stadium, with them and the Arizona Cardinals they are paying for 80% of the entire costs so there is hardly a burden on the taxpayers.

34. Former Phoenix, Glendale, Peoria, New River resident here
Yup. Tax the tourists to build the stadium. Watched the debate in 2000 while visiting family and friends in AZ.

Now that I'm out of state, I fly into Vegas and rent my car there. If I don't stay with friends, I don't stay overnight in AZ anymore. Why?
The attitude of, "Let's put additional costs on the objects of our #1 industry - tourism! They don't live here, so let 'em pay for our toys."

Sorry, there are too many other items that need addressing in AZ before stadium building. Is the cash surplus *snicker8 the reason why Maricopa County Schools are turning to so many purely online primary and secondary schools? According to the Republic and Gazette and the NCSD website, it's because of lack of funds and teachers. Just what we need, 10 online ONLY ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS! Yeah, I want those kids working for or alongside me in the future. Maybe we can have an online medical school, too with cyber internships and residencies.

Take care of the people before using dollars to pander to multimillion dollar entertainment enterprises. Call it business incenive if you will, but the dollars could be better used in education, infrastructure, and social programs.

Rant closed.

35. I'm sorry, maybe I'm missing something
but a group funded by taxes is paying for this stadium. You just acnowledged that. How then can you say, in the next sentance, that they are not relying on taxpayers? Isn't that kinda the definition of tax-payer funded? Sure, that particular tax may not affect you, but it's still a tax, right?

40. It's tax money being collected locally...
that is going to build a stadium. It could be used for other purposes, but it is not. Therefore, it does affect those who live there. It's difficult to see how the area will come out ahead of the costs associated with the stadium. Even with other events there, the money scenario is very sketchy.

37. Fan support doesn't have much to do with it.
In fact, it's likely an NFL marketing push, at least in part. The new stadium will be a couple years old, and fans drawn to check it out might be waning a bit, if the Cards continue to play as usual. The Super Bowl is another way to increase interest and sell tix to Cards games.

5. Well hopefully
But that happen after Super Bowl 30 when it was here at Sun Devil Stadium. Bill Bidwell doesn't deserve the money but the city does, check out this

<snip>
Gregg Holmes, chairman of the Bid Committee, said the economic impact of the 2008 game could be as high as $400 million. Napolitano said the game will serve as an engine for future economic growth.

“I think every time you put on a world-class event, people see our state, see what's going on and then they'll say, ‘We'll come, we'll bring our convention here,’ ” Napolitano said.

“It just feeds on itself. It'll bring dollars to the Valley and a lot of free advertising.”

Duh.

You never "seen" janitors walking the streets in any city you've been to?

They're not "janitors," they're public works employees - or in Phoenix, residents of Sheriff Joe's exclusive motel. I frequently see Sheriff Joe's chain gangs picking up trash along the roadways. The problem is, the pigs living here just keep tossing it out their windows.

I've been to many cities, and I've never seen one as filthy as Phoenix.

Glad you find the filth in Phoenix amusing. I don't share your laughter.

22. Not every jail has a chain gain like Sheriff Joe
But I may not have used the phrase "public work employees" but their job is very similar as to what a janitor's job is and that is to pick up trash, empty trash bins, etc. I just don't see that in my cities or any other cities but you say they should clean up their streets, well you just pointed out that Joe's chain gain already is so appearently that isn't working. Who said I found the filth in Phoenix amusing? Not many metropolitan areas are clean.

Your response to my first post was lol. If you didn't find the filth amusing, what were you laughing out loud about?

Like I said, I've been to many cities, some larger, some smaller than Phoenix, and I've never seen one as dirty as this one. I don't understand why the people living here don't take pride in their city and surrounding communities. Phoenix could be a beautiful, impressive city. It's just not there yet. That's all I'm saying.

and I have to tell you...the roads in my area are not trash piles...the occaisional 5 gallon bucket that fell off a work truck...other then that...they are not filthy...

The sherriff joe's chain gangs are voluntary...many inmates want to go out and do this...get's them outside...they make money...and major roads are clean...

Who knows...mabye even the AZ Cardinals just might play in the SuperBowl...

maybe...it could happen...

Think about it...you have Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe, Phoenix...nice weather year around...nice plush golf courses...and some of the best resturants you will find...and kick ass nightlife...

This is going to be HUGE for the Phoenix area...!

It sure would be a nice change, and give the game some much needed character. Lambeau was just redone. Cleveland's got a fairly new home. Same with Pittsburgh. Football is supposed to be an all-conditions sport. Let's see the championship game played as if that were true.
