this morning, I think I was suicidal.
I have said how due to cutbacks, I lost the job that I loved and had only been hired for one week prior. I am still despondent about it, but what scared me was that if one thing had happened to make me snap this morning, I wouldn't be posting right now. It is frightening.

I hope I get a call about another job next week. I can't keep on living like this. I try to pretend everything is fine, but that will destroy you.

1. Keep going as long as you're able.

Joblessness stinks.

I've been using my "newfound" extra time to seek other employment and look up new fields.

It's not easy; hard as hell. But I've a history of suicidal tendencies going back to age 16. I'm more than twice that age now and am still here. If a guy like me can make it, anyone can.

3. This is the emotional equivalent of a heart attack.
Its that serious. Call the suicide hotline and get some references to other resources.

4. Remember the 3-day rule
If you're intent on something rash, wait three days before acting. It will get better before then. Shit, I don't mean to be spouting platitudes. I've been where you are. You can survive it, and you will. You have to find that inner strength that keeps you moving.

You're in our thoughts. In fact, now you have to check in from time to time and let us know how things are. You hear me? You better not do something rash. We care about you.

8. I am not now.
It was a 10 minute period this morning where I thought I was. I don't think I ever would. I opened my curtains, hugged my cats, called some friends and realised that next week, I could get a call and it would be such a waste if I did anything drastic. It was scary to have those thoughts though. I am fine now. I am still sad, but that is to be expected:(.

5. Whoa,
I'm afraid any response I give will come across as flippant, or counter-productive, but this is a message which MUST be responded to. Don't pretend everything is fine-but do know that employment or career setbacks are temporary.

And you can rest assured that is coming from somebody who KNOWS. I've been tanked from jobs and careers I've both loved and hated--usually hated--but not always.

Shoot, on at least two occasions not getting a job I really wanted (both indirectly due to my poor eyesight) allowed me to 1) go to college, and then 2) go to Antarctica--which would've been impossible had I been at a regular full-time career position. Sometimes setbacks are opportunities--especially if you are forced to make them so.

I won't tell you to cheer up, but I will say hang on.

yes I do...
It was just a 10 minute period this morning. I am fine now. I have friends, I have two cats sitting with me, and I have two different headhunter agencies searching for me. They would not have taken me on had I been a lost cause.

10. You Don't Need To Pretend Everything Is Fine....
... when it isn't. What you need to do is fight for your sanity every single day. It's a long dark tunnel. I know. I've been in it. But if you continue to fight the negative thoughts, there will be light. It won't be today, and probably not tomorrow, but eventually.

Continue on, you can do it.
