1. Brings back memories from childhood
I learned to be completely addicted to seafood in part because of smelts. I was raised for my first 7 years in New Jersey and I remember having them quite often. Fried up with some lemon and tartar sauce.

And to give you an idea just how bad my seafood addiction really was.... During an outing my mother and I took when my father was gravely ill, just to get away from home for a couple of days (I would have been 3 or 4 years old), we went to the hotel restaurant for breakfast and I threw an ear-splitting tantrum because the seafood dishes on the dinner side of the menu couldn't be prepared at 6 in the morning. :)

Seriously, thank you for bringing a smile to my face. I've had a bad couple of days and this post was an icebreaker.

I love smelts. Haven't had them for decades, haven't thought about
them either, but now, I want some.

I used to have to clean the little boogers. And since there were nine kids in my family, I have to tell you that I'd have to clean A BUNCH of 'em.

And them my grandmother would bread and fry them. Oh yum.

3. I grew up catching and sometimes eating smelts while growing
up in Northern WI. We would net them at the mouths of rivers and streams flowing into Lake Superior. They would run in the spring time in huge numbers. In college, we would mix the anual smelt run with huge beer busts (vets club) on WI Point -- just south of Superior. Biting the heads off was a big deal -- uncooked, of course. I forget the story on how they got into the lake. I think the runs no longer happen. Trout fisheries have come back (trout now eat the smelt) -- I think.

4. I used to love smelt.
Every time I go back home to WI I have to order it straight off the menu. You can't find that on menus in MO.
