Lived in NJ for 5 years (college & grad school). I remember one summer when it rained, and you literally could see the steam rise from the ground and re-form clouds, then dump rain again.

Air conditioning is your best friend.

I used to live in Ridgewood NJ, and yes, it did get pretty damn hot in summer, but it wasn't anybody's armpit by any means - I'd probably trade you anywhere in Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas - in fact anywhere south of Philadelphia at this time of year - as truly unlivable without A/C.

8. One word: Elizabeth.

I lived in Jersey--ok, in Hoboken, where I was an undergrad for three semesters--and still remember driving from Baltimore (home) up the turnpike Sunday evenings. It always struck me as something out of a bad scifi novel. Elizabeth, that is, not the turnpike or Hoboken.

Then again, Houston really is yucky. We moved from Rochester, NY, here last summer, and I can't decide which is worse: the cockroaches and humidity, or the wind and 120 inches of snow.

9. Why God created air-conditioning: DC in the summer

A friend from Alabama says that DC gets just as miserable as Alabama in the summertime. The difference is that Alabama just has more days of it than DC.

Nothing like them cold northern states like New Jersey.
