I just go nuts when I hear that organ riff! I have a tape of their live album/CD, and I play it all the time in the summer. 96 Tears is truly one of the greatest one hit wonders.

12. Small Town Boy by The Bronski Beat.
SMALL TOWN BOY

You leave in the morning
With everything you own
In a little black case
Alone on a platform
The wind and the rain
On a sad and lonely face

Mother will never understand
Why you had to leave
But the answers you seek
Will never be found at home
The love that you need
Will never be found at home

Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away.
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away.

Pushed around and kicked around
Always a lonely boy
You were the one
That they’d talk about around town
As they put you down

And as hard as they would try
They’d hurt to make you cry
But you never cried to them
Just to your soul
No you never cried to them
Just to your soul

Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away.
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away.

Cry , boy, cry...

You leave in the morning
With everything you own
In a little black case
Alone on a platform
The wind and the rain
On a sad and lonely face

Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away.
Run away, turn away, run away, turn away, run away.

84. Wasn't the song "Why" a hit for the Bronski Beat?
Contempt in your eyes
When I turn to kiss his lips
Broken I lie
All my feelings denied
Blood on your fist

Can you tell me why?

You in your false securities
Tear up my life
Condemning me
Name me an illness
Call me a sin
Never feel guilty
Never give in

Tell me why?

You and me together
Fighting for our love

Can you tell me why?

I could probably sing the whole song right now, despite having not heard it for all these years.

When the song came out, the local paper did an article on lonely women who call in to radio shows.

On edit: I also remember another song, this one by a gruff-voiced male singer, about lonely people listening to the radio. I think it was called "Love Is on the Airwaves Tonight." I have no idea who sang it or if that's the correct title.

Nearly the entire playlist from my high school years ("Brother Louie," "Wildflower," "Chickaboom," etc.) is represented here.

But I have especially fond memories of "One Night in Bangkok" from the '80s (the song, not the location). :-)

When I was kind of in highschool, (didn't go much), there was a friend of mine who became a lesbian. She feel in love with a girl who was always more 'masculine'in appearance. This was in the seventies, so you can imagine what she went through, just trying to be herself. That song was my friends song for her. I remember how in love they were.

U100. Couldn't forget it. They had the last of the real "personality" DJs in the Twin Cities - Rob Sherwood. Those were the days when KQ was still the hippie station and would play an entire side of a new Dylan album and side-length Yes and Pink Floyd tracks.

My one hit wonders are the late Phil Seymour's "Precious to Me" (ex Dwight Twilley band member - a beautiful piece of Byrdsy jangle-guitar power pop) and Ian Gomm's "Hold On." :)

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
(4X)

Jungle life
I'm far away from nowhere
On my own like Tarzan Boy

Hide and seek
I play along while rushing cross the forest
Monkey business on a sunny afternoon

Jungle life
I'm living in the open
Native beat that carries on

Burning bright
A fire the blows teh signal to the sky
I sit and wonder does the message get to you

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
(4X)

Night to night
Gimme the other, gimme the other chance
tonight
Gimme the other, gimme the other
Night to night
Gimme the other, gimme the other world

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
(4X)

Jungle life
You're far away from nothing
It's all right
You won't miss home

Take a chance
Leave everything behind you
Come and join me
Won't be sorry
It's easy to survive

Jungle life
We're living in the open
All alone like Tarzan Boy

Hide and seek
We play along while rushing cross the
forest
Monkey business on a sunny afternoon

Night to night
Gimme the other, gimme the other
Chance tonight
Oh Yeah
Night to night
Gimme the other, gimme the other
Night to night
You won't play
Night to night
Gimme the other, gimme the other
Chance tonight
Oh Yeah
Night to night
Night to night
Gimme the other, gimme the other

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
(4X)
(Repeat)

94. Oh, oh, another good one-- "Mickey" by Toni Basil!

(I was SHOCKED as a kid when someone explained the "take you like a man" lyric to me)

(Oh Mickey, you're so fine
you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Mickey, hey Mickey)
(Oh Mickey, you're so fine
you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Mickey, hey Mickey)
(Oh Mickey, you're so fine
you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Mickey)

Hey Mickey!
You've been around all night and that's a little long
You think you've got the right but I think you've got it wrong
Why can't you say goodnight so you can take me home, Mickey

'Cause when you say you will, it always means you won't
You're givin' me the chills, baby, please baby don't
Every night you still leave me all alone, Mickey

Oh Mickey, what a pity you don't understand
You take me by the heart when you take me by the hand
Oh Mickey, you're so pretty, can't you understand
It's guys like you Mickey
Oh, what you do Mickey, do Mickey
Don't break my heart, Mickey

Hey Mickey!
Now when you take me by the hooves, everyone's gonna know
Every time you move I let a little more show
There's somethin' we can use, so don't say no, Mickey

So come on and give it to me any way you can
Any way you wanna do it, I'll take you like a man
Oh please, baby, please, don't leave me in a jam, Mickey

Oh Mickey, what a pity you don't understand
You take me by the heart when you take me by the hand
Oh Mickey, you're so pretty, can't you understand
It's guys like you Mickey
Oh, what you do Mickey, do Mickey
Don't break my heart, Mickey

(Oh Mickey, you're so fine
you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Mickey, hey Mickey)
(Oh Mickey, you're so fine
you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Mickey, hey Mickey)
(Oh Mickey, you're so fine

Oh Mickey, what a pity you don't understand

It hit #20 in 1968.

Of course, Jimi Hendix' main appeal was not the top 40 crowd, so it's not surprising that his music wasn't on the top 40 charts.

137. Was Spirit in the Sky
by Norman Greenbaum a single hit? Or did he do anything else worthy of time spent listening?

Then there was Lobo, whose "How can I tell her" was the only hit I can remember,

The guy who sang "Last Song"?

And the guy who sang "Maniac" from Footloose--can't recall if he had other big tunes.

143. Norman Greenbaum's other chart hit was "Canned Ham".
Lobo had about a dozen chart hits. Still gosh-darn popular in non-US markets.

"Last Song" was by Edward Bear. The follow up hit was "Close Your Eyes".

"Maniac" was by Michael Sembello. I don't think he had any other hits.

God, I have to get out more.

Rescue me
Take me in your arms
Rescue me
I want your tender charm
'Cause I'm lonely
And I'm blue

And your love too
Come on and rescue me

Come on, baby, and rescue me
Come on, baby, and rescue me
'Cause I need you by my side
Can't you see that I'm lonely...
