It's your turn. Rag on your least favorite university and give a reason..
why it's so despicable.

Two of my least favorites:

Ole Miss. A bunch of debutantes and frat boys who think that their shit doesn't stink.

Mississippi State University. Cow Tech. 101 ways to breed a heffer.

(Let's keep it good natured. And, of course, if your alma mater is mentioned, you have every right to defend it.)

2. Definitely Ole Miss
I think their love of their mascot says it all.

Alabama is next on my list. I can proudly claim to have been in the stands when USM beat Alabama 38 to 19, one of the Bear's last games. We stood in the student section of the stands chanting "Call yo Momma, call yo Momma" (remember his long distance commercials ) It was glorious.

8. Do you remember how embarassing it was to
let the bartender see you go to the restroom. He would use that switch behind the bar and set the red lights to flashing and the siren to blaring.

And the End Zone, damn, I've often wondered what that place looked like sober.

Definitely we need a Mississippi meet up. :hi:

I'm on the coast and can try to help arrange it.

LOL!

You know that the End Zone burned down. They just finished rebuilding it.

There's a cool little club where everyone hangs out now. It's called "206" because it's at 206 Front Street.

We do really need to get a Mississippi meet up going. I'd LOVE for it to be in Biloxi, maybe at the Grand? What do you think?

11. A Mississippi meet up would be great.
The Grand would be good or the Palace, I've had to deal with Casino Magic Biloxi to set up conferences and they are a great bunch to work with. You just let me know what you have in mind and I'll touch base with the few folks I know in the industry and see what we can arrange.

I didn't realize the End Zone burned down. I bet it went up in a flash, with all of the spilled alcohol that had soaked into the ground and been absorbed by the walls. I graduated '82, was there when Reggie Collier was the golden boy of the football team. I haven't been up there for any celebrations in years, though I did catch Godspell when the theater department put it on about 2 years ago.

Rambling here!

Let me know :hi:

16. I'm finishing my PhD there.
Earned my MA there in 2000. It's a great bunch of people, but the president of the uni is an asshole. I'm sure you've read in the Sun Herald about all of the controversy he's created.

There was an excellent website up last year--FireShelby--that kept up with the whole mess. The best website to keep up with it now is the forum at the AAUP website. www.aaup-usm.org.

Seriously, let's work on something for late summer or early fall. I'm not the expert by any means on places down there...there are some nice casino hotels. I heard that the Hard Rock was set to open soon. Has it opened yet?

Hugs! So great to meet someone else who knows a lot about the region. :D

She is working on her masters. I'm well aware of polymer head's poison, between Shelby and Trent Lott's influence (attempts to buy a legacy), I've had my concerns for USM.

Hard Rock is to open this fall and I have a very close friend, almost brother, who is the chief financial officer. I've never hit him up for any favors, so he is due. ;-)

I am just tickled to know that others in MS are addicted to DU. I know there are more liberals than we think in MS, I just don't know where they are.

20. Can't wait until the Hard Rock opens.
Maybe they'll get some really good acts.

Funny story of how I met a liberal couple in my area: My son and I stopped to buy some chicks at Easter from a guy in a parking lot. Well, as we were talking to the chicken guy, a guy was behind us, painting a gazebo near a restaurant that was being renovated. Painter guy walked over to my son, who was wearing a "Kinky Friedman for Gov." tee, and asked my son where he got the tee. We started talking politics, and the next thing ya know, we are gathered in the restaurant with the painter guy and his wife, really ripping on Republicans.

It turns out that I knew his wife from a local meet-up of Dem women last fall. Furthermore, the couple have kids my son's age. We said goodbye and promised to stay in touch.

They just recently opened their restaurant and I really need to go by and visit. I hear it's doing great--and it has a liberal name, which I was certain would doom it in the Southern Baptist town in which I live, but I drove by yesterday and it looked like it was packed, with people waiting outside for a seat. I'm certain that it will be a liberal meet-up place in the future. I'm really excited about it.

The Coast, though, has become very conservative. I heard that Biloxi or Gulfport just voted in a Republican mayor. Oh well.

Let's keep in touch. I'll PM you my email addy, so we can do so. :hi:

24. The repuke mayor that just won in Gulfport is a very good looking
young fellow that bought his support. He hangs out with all the socialites. His family has operated a men's clothing store for 45 years, so dad has money and connections.

Gulfport is in sad financial straits, they only have 2 casinos, compared to the 8 that Biloxi has (9 with Hard Rock). I grew up in Gulfport but have lived in Biloxi since I was graduated from USM. The young mayor may be in over his head, his dad has wanted to consolidate governmental services in the coastal cities and I am afraid son will try to realize his dad's dreams. He will have a rude awakening. But, new blood in Gulfport can't hurt. The mayor now is an old former general of the MS Guard, so old he is senile and has been in hiding, I mean undergoing hospital care, for the past 6 months or so.

We will set up some type of meet up and heck, whenever you are in the area, just let me know. McElroy's fried mullet and gumbo with a glass of beer can't be beat. :hi:

26. We ate at a small family owned seafood restaurant a couple of ...
months ago. The building was blue-gray with white trim. It was set kind of back kind of off Beach Boulevard in Biloxi, and you could see the wharf across from you on the waterfront from your table at the window. I can't for the life of my remember the name of it, but it had delicious fried oysters and the service there was superbly friendly.

Could that be McElroys?

And I will certainly give you a heads-up the next time we stay down there. We visit at least several times a year.

I sent you a PM with my email addy, just in case you need to catch me when I'm away from DU. If you're ever over in this neck of the woods, let me know, and we'll have some drinks!

28. Was it in the small craft harbor, all the boats were around you and
it was to the east of where Hard Rock is being built? If so, that is McElroys. You have to tell them you want an iced mug for your beer, for some reason, they serve the coldest beer in town. They have the best food.

Mahoney's is good, but over priced and it is more of a fancy place. I like the atmosphere at McElroys.

Of course, if you want fine dining, I'd say go to Vrazels over Mahoneys.

Please let me know when you visit again. :hi:

Hillsdale--The right winger wacko Geroge Roche was screwing his daughter in law for twenty years.
----------------------------------------
Hillsdale revisited

New book suggests Lissa Roche suicide raises unanswered questions

by Curt Guyette
10/3/2000 5:04:00 PM
After establishing itself as one of the high holy places of American conservatism, Michigan’s Hillsdale College found itself wallowing in tragedy and scandal last year.

In the aftermath of an apparent suicide by college official Lissa Roche, daughter-in-law of longtime Hillsdale president George Roche III, it was alleged by Roche’s son, George Roche IV, that his father and Lissa had been, ahem, intimate.

The story made national headlines. For liberals, it was yet another example of conservative hypocrisy, with moralizer George III frequently spouting off sanctimoniously about declining family values while allegedly diddling his daughter-in-law for nearly 20 years. Right-wingers could only shake their heads in bewilderment while defending the venerable institution as being more than the man who ran it with dictatorial authority for three decades.

17. how about a love/hate relationship?
Got alot out of it while I was there

But it graduated folks like Dan Quayle

Was greeker than any other U I know (80% - and I was greek at th time)

But because everyone was greek some of the status was removed per being greek and different greek orgs. (The U supported the system at the time, so they didn't have to build more dorms - has changed over the years.

Was on a visit with High schoolers recently - and saw a "deeper" U, than when I was there - very cool.

But still very conservative (pushing me to be apolitical while I was there years ago.)

However - while I grew more - in terms of my identity and political views after I graduated and moved to and worked in DC after college - it did prepare me to kick *ss in some grad classes that later enabled me to get into the top grad program in my field. That is ultimately, looking back, what was important - intellectualluy I built those skills at good ole little conservative DePauw.

Though after I worked in DC for a few years - and came back to hang out with other grads (esp at my five year reunion) I felt so distant fromn them (per political views, and views on life in general) that I rather distance myself from the scene. Point - it was cool at the time - then I found myself needing great distance for a number of yers... but later found the academic preparation (the profs - were great) openned outstanding doors for me that I can not scoff at - and when I go back today- the campus is beginning to change (more diversity of people and of ideas).

And I learned early on, how to speak to conservatives in a way that they would listen to what I have to say rather than dismiss me (these days, that is a very important skill.)

Does this make any sense?

27. exactly
and as I have visited in recent years (helpful to the nonprofit I have started) - I have gone from aversion - to a bit of fondness.

The son of a friend chose to go there over places like Boston College and Notre Dame... had a better scholarship. He is a solidly liberal kid - so I coached him through the realities of a student body that might believe things quite differently than he... and he pointed out that he had already lived through that (going through a cettain conservative high school ...) He has not only done weel -= but just before the election he and a group of other DPU students traveled to Ohio to work on grass roots Dem work before the election.

That wouldn't have happened when I was there - one of those moments that I warmed a bit more to the school of today vs the day when I graduated - where I was prepared academically - but starved in terms of political philosophy as a liberal.

The fans at Arizona State suck too. I was at a football game with my mom (in her 60s) and my daughter (14 months). Some ASU prickheads came over to us in the visiting section and started heckling us. When we didn't respond, they threw beer on us. On my toddler kid. Real nice.
