Looser/loser does it drive anyone else crazy?

I keep seeing this weird spelling. Does it drive anyone else crazy?

If you have a pair of pants that are too big they are "loose"; if you take off your belt the pants will be "looser".

You can "lose" in a game of poker and that will make you a "loser".

Dammit, how hard is that to distinguish?

Every time I see someone using "loose" when they mean "lose" or "looser" when they mean "loser" it drives me crazy!!!!!

Anyone else get bugged out when they see this mistake?

Sad, really. Educational reform is WAY overdue.

On the other hand, the British educational system stopped teaching students the difference between plural and possessive about 50 years ago and since I work with a lot of Brits, THAT drives me bonkers.

As in "Dougs car" vs "Doug's car. . ."

But it's not.

Really it drives me crazy.

There's a legitimate thing the British say: "He's in hospital" instead of American English: "He's in the hospital". I get it.

But the "loose/loser" thing is a weird thing. It's not about where you are from. Some people actually think that you spell "loser" as "looser". Damn, it drives me crazy.

8. You should see the spelling and grammar at sports forums I frequent

Misplaced apostrophes also drive me mad. As does the use of quotation marks for emphasis (which always parses to me as scare quotes).

Just this morning, in the Hartford newspaper, the travel writer wrote about "taking a peak" at something or other in the Everglades. Argh!

What a looser. But I shouldnt complain, because he know's how to use his apostrophe's and quotation marks "correctly" almost everyday, so thats at least something positive.

17. I think people think "loser" ought to have a longer "o" sound

than "looser" so it should have more ohs. As in, "ha, ha! you're a looooooooser!"

So many people have such a hard time keeping it straight that there has to be a logic to it.

The grammatical errors are plentiful on the forums here at DU. But like you, I bite my tongue. I am a copy editor. My job is to correct grammar, spelling and punctuation for 10 magazines, so you I am sure you know how I cringe when I see all these errors. I often wonder how some of the posters ever passed basic high school English and grammar.

That drives me crazy. I know there are some who have trouble with spelling because they're thinking (Mark Twain was reportedly atrocious at it)....but it's a personal pet peeve of mine.

I think it is insulting when someone corrects my grammar or spelling on DU. I spell terrible, type worse and am lazy. I don't always use the apostrophe when I am in a hurry. I am more concerned over what someone says then whether it is perfect grammar. Even the best writers have editors.

Shame on all of you!

BTW..ONE of the words I used on this post I spelled wrong and the computer corrected it!
