I just watched "Hotel Rwanda," and I'm ashamed of my government. nt

1. Hotel Rwanda was great

But did you really need a movie to make you ashamed of your government? Haha.

2. As I watched Hotel Rwanda, I was reminded of what I have read

of the US government's response to reports of persecution of Jews in Germany. The US did not want to allow Jewish children in because they would grow up to be Jewish adults (and there was A LOT of antisemitism in the US at the time).

Hotel Rwanda was so much like Schindler's List. What is amazing is that all of this took place in 1994, after Schindler's List was released to the theatres and people's awareness of the Holocause increased. Yet the US did nothing. I'll bet if there had been oil or some other exploitable resource in Rwanda or the people had been white, the US response would have been different.

4. When they were getting all the "whites" out and the lady on the bus

had her DOG on her lap looking sad! I was thinking, American's love their pets more than humans, it was disgusting to me. I think of Darfar and that genocide as well. I think the truest line was when the reporter played Joaquin Phonix was, "I think people will say, 'look at that, how horrible', and then go back to finishing eating their dinner."

Indeed, we are easily distracted.

Remember what Nick Nolte said to Don Cheadle in the bar as everything was falling apart. Truer and sadder words were never spoken.

6. Now watch "Sometimes in April' for another part of the genocide

It is more graphic, but not as bad as Terminator or Jurassic Park but also worse because it was real. It is about 2 brothers and familys experiences. It is a good compliment to Rwanda. And I am ashamed too. I remember watching the news and trying to figure out wtf was going on and why the UN and world was letting it happen. I have read some books recently and, while I am understanding more, still wonder.
