Poll question: if you were forced to give up your accent...

and required to adopt a new one, which would you choose:

-an American regional accent of your choice

or

-a foreign accent chosen for you at random

I've asked this amongst friends, etc, before, and the results were quite interesting

I speak the Queen's English (and she's jolly well not having it back either).

Voted foreign - whilst I might end up with a gorgeous (to my mind) southern accent, I might also end up with some horrible nasal thing from New Jersey or similar :scared:

according to many Brits/Middle Easterners/etc. I've met/known. So do my friends and family.

I never get this "NJ accent" thing.

The only New Jerseyans who talk strange with the "cawfee" and the Soprano talk are transplants from NY.

I've got a couple I'd LIKE to have, and know there are some for which I would prefer an American regional instead. But I figure I'll take the roll of the dice.

That way I could choose something fairly mainstream not much different from what I have now. With foreign accents it's a crap shoot. Some are lovely, some much less so, others difficult to understand.

I'm from the deep South, but being an Army brat removed any trace of an accent in an effort to fit in.

I am, however, able to turn on the drawl when it suits me and I discovered it was very useful when travelling up north. Apparently northern men will bend over backwards to assist a southern belle, LOL!

And, I guess I adopted a Northern one. I don't think I would like a randomly chosen one forced on me, no matter if it's foreign or not. :shrug:
