My heart has broken
I just received word that the hawk we rescued had to be euthanized. It seems she suffered a break right at the joint on her wing. (Had the break been anywhere else...)

Here's a link to the original thread with photographs: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=105&topic_id=3437296&mesg_id=3437296

I'm gonna head out and walk the trails for a bit.

1. You showed this animal care and did what was right by it
I understand how it hurts but it was out of your control.

2. That sucks.

The fact that you cared enough about the creature to attempt to save it speaks volumes.

Peace.

7. Please try not to be sad, because
you've helped and that IS all you can do, outcomes aren't up to us. Thanks for trying, these stories restore my faith in ppl. (And serve to reassure me that _I'M_ not over-the-top....oh the things I do for furry&feathered friends:)

Better luck next time, sure, there'll be one:-)

8. how very sad
Your previous thread really touched me, especially where you say ..

"I feel extremely blessed to have had the pleasure of being around her for several hours. It is an experience our entire family will not soon forget."

Don't ever forget you did your best :)

I'm misty-eyed all over again. So many times I type things here at DU and I wonder if anyone will/does read it and then I wonder if anyone really understands it or the feeling behind it. It's wonderful to know that folks do read and that, at least sometimes, I'm not written off as a freak. :)

Thank you. And thanks to everyone who took a moment to respond. I would do the same thing (rescue the hawk and look for help) in a heartbeat. It's just sad that this one couldn't be saved.

14. Oh no! I'm so sorry!
She was beautiful. Well, you probably helped her have a more peaceful death than she would have had in the wild, if that is any comfort. It's probably not.

We had an owl that hung around our farm, who got hit by a car on the busy road in front of our place. He also had to be put down. So sad when these majestic and powerful birds are lost.

Sigh...

May her spirit soar with you on sunny days when you are feeling joyful again.

16. My dear CF,
As others have said, it was out of your hands. You did all you could, and that was a whole lot more than most people would have done.

And also remember, that this bird would have likely died a much worse death out in the wild...Euthanasia is a much more gentle way to die...

Please be consoled...We are proud of you and your daughter...
