Poll question: There's No Such Thing As "Gay" or "Straight"...

everyone is bisexual to a certain extent; most people are just more inclined one way or the other.

Who agrees or disagrees with that? 'Cus that's the philosophy I practice & preach! :)

1. That is pretty much what Kinsey always said.

He stated that most humans were more bisexual than anything else and that the true deviations were those who were exclusively hetero-or homo-sexual.

I mean, you could be just a "straight" person and have a "gay" experience, and enjoy it, but that doesn't make you gay necessarily. And likewise, a "gay" person could have a hetero experience but that doesn't mean they're not gay.

Sexuality is so fluid and abstract, it defies these labels, I think.

9. To be completely straight or gay means that, technically,

you could not appreciate the beauty of either your same or opposite sex (whatever your case may be). I consider myself to be a hetero female but I can appreciate a beautiful woman and have enough confidence in my own sexuality to comment on it. on the kinsey scale i can go anywhere from a 4 to a 5...

at least when someone sees me, they will have another human being to attach to the word "gay"... therefore, hopefully, their definition might expand (beyond existing stereotypes)

It's always interesting when people become friends with you and then are shocked to learn that you're gay, because you don't "act" gay or just because they never thought they could be friends with a gay person.

I consider myself bisexual but I am 100% monogamous with my wife. I only ever look at straight porn, partly because I personally find anal sex repulsive (even hetero anal sex) but when I look at a straight porno I look at the men as much as the women, so I'd be lying if I said "I'm 100% straight".

Orientation is a pretty complex brew. The only person qualified to define a person's sexuality is that person him or herself, IMO.

But we live in a society that insists on putting everyone into neat gay/straight pigeonholes.

I suppose that if you feel 100% comfortable within either of the pigeonholes, you're probably not bisexual (but I do believe that there is at least a tiny bit in everyone)

I am of the mindset that any sexual activity that goes on between consenting adults is OK. I am involved in a number of activities culturally and professionally that put me around straight and gay and bisexual people frequently, and that is AOK with me.

But guess what? I am straight. There is such a thing. Homosexual activity (safely conducted) would not harm me personally or professionally. I just don't want to do it. No offense to people who feel otherwise, it just gives me the willies. Likewise, I know people who are (as best as they describe it) gay. Not bisexual. I'm sure plenty of people really are bisexual. In fact, I'm good friends with at least three who claim to be. More power to them.

You are what you are and God bless you for it. But running around saying that everyone is really bisexual is not much better than running around saying everyone is really straight. For this world to work, individuals have to accept that others might just be fundamentally different than they are.

If there really is a Kinsey quote, I'd like to see it.

I think of sexuality as a broad sprectrum, and possibly mutable. "Straight" and "gay" are convenient terms for people at or near the two ends. Who's to say what's really going on inside all those minds, though? Even Kinsey could only study what people were willing to admit.

I identify myself as heterosexual, but I am not 100% heterosexual. Everyone who I have "fallen in love" with has been male. I do find women attractive though and have had close friendships with members of both sexes. I am bisexual to some extent.
I don't know how everyone else feels so I cannot say. I think that some people will lie to themselves though in some cases like this, but perhaps not all the time.

They are extreme terms like black and white, found at the ends of the spectrum. They are used to dominate the middle. Only 1 out of 10 people are exclusively straight or gay, 8 out of 10 are some varying degree of "bisexual."

What's sad is the way society in general DOESN'T agree.

It seems to me most Americans now like to pretend that your statement is SO true about women, because of the media-created fad developed over the past few years in which straight guys wanna see chicks get it on.

(And I think this really is pretty fake too - men have always fantasized about having a bunch of women to themselves at once, but the women are supposed to be focused on YOU.)

And conversely, most Americans also like to pretend that it is so NOT true about men. There are tons of reasons I think we have come to this point: AIDS doesn't help, for one thing, because straight men naturally feel now that any suspicion that they themselves might have had a homosexual experience can make them untouchable for women. If they ever create a vaccine for HIV, we will see a sudden explosion of open male bisexuality (while at the same time ridiculous place-holders like "professional wrestling" will wither away, or become a lot more "extreme".)

It's also an unfortunate side-effect of the increasing acceptance over time of gay men by society. Honestly, I think part of this is because most straight men KNOW deep down that they have a little bit of homosexuality in them, and they become so frightened of being caught for that particular thought-crime and branded with the big G.

I think part of this also is the fact that people know that there are circumstances where othewise "normal" men WILL engage in homosexual sex when women aren't available, such as in prison, or at sea ("rum, sodomy and the lash" as Churchill once said about the Royal Navy.) Giving in to or even acknowledging homosexual desires might feel to the average guy kind of like "giving up."

It's nice to see that people here on DU seem to understand about the "spectrum" -- although even here, not always. How many comments have you seen that want to brand Tom Cruise "gay"? Isn't he at least "bisexual"?
