Why is it PC to say "person of colour," but racially insensitive to say "coloured person"?

1. I always avoid the term

"color" or "colored" in terms of race.

Because that implies that, being white, I'm not colored. But I definitely am a color...just a lighter one. :shrug:

2. they're both dumb terms

and a professor of mine made a similar observation:

"you're saying the exact same thing, but in reverse."

he's black and there's no "race phrase" he hates more than "person of color"
