Backstreet Boys Re-Enter Pop Landscape

f nothing else, the Backstreet Boys are realistic. Reunited after four years, they don't have any illusions that they'll be able to dominate the pop scene as they did when boy bands ruled the world — and they were the kings.

"We know that we're gonna have to pay our dues again and we know that we're going to have to start from scratch because everything has changed," said A.J. McLean, the heavily tattooed, shades-wearing member of the group. "We're not looking to be the group that we were in '99 and 2000."

"We lost perspective pretty much," said Kevin Richardson, the eldest of the "boys" at 33. "If we hadn't walked away from the business and each other, we might have self-destructed because we needed some time away from each other."

Now, fully recharged, the Backstreet Boys have returned this week to release "Never Gone," their first full studio album since the 8 million-selling "Black & Blue" in 2000. While they're not expecting an automatic ride to the top of the charts, they think they still have a shot at reaching the No. 1 spot with a more adult, edgier sound that tilts more toward rock than pop.

1. Good luck to them, I guess. Boy bands are so...lite-FM.
It must be hard to *still* be in a boy band when you're in you late 20s early 30s...and they must know that everyone is thinking "ewww".

But still, EWW. Wow, with your pants down you look SO edgy and hot!

7. When are you going to run out of entertainers to bash, Bush_Eats_Beef?
Why don't you just make a generic "I HATE ALL ARTISTS" post that you can bump to the top twice a day?

That would just about cover everybody and everything you hate.

Thanks for the unsolicited psychoanalysis, and remember the DU rules:

God made the "ignore" and "hide" features for posts like mine. They're yours for the taking.

ON EDIT: Did ya notice that when I replied to your post, it "pushed" me "back to the top?"

SWEET! Thank you EVER SO MUCH.

9. I swear, last time I was in NYC the street was blocked for half an
hour and I missed an appointment. The cabby said "Back Street Boys." Sure enough, a thousand teeny boppers screaming in a huge clump blocking the road. Now finally after six years I have to go back to the city and what is the first thing I hear on the Today Show..."The Backstreet Boys are back!"
I was so thrilled...

14. Is that the album cover???
Why?? I used to really like them in the 90's. They have pretty okay vocals. They aren't Boys II Men though but they're better then *NSync.

16. Wasn't one of them thinking about running for political office?
I'm not making this up. I swear I remember reading that one of the Backstreet Boys was considering running for office. It sounds too bizarre to be true, I know.

17. Are you sure you're not thinking about the 'N Sync-er...
...who wanted to go into space with the Russians, but failed to come up with the down payment?

http://www.forbes.com/2002/09/03/0903orbit.html

NEW YORK - Unless you've been in orbit yourself, you've probably heard by now that Lance Bass, member of the boy band 'N Sync, will not be traveling to space on a Russian rocket. The Russians said dos vidania to the dreamy, dyed-blond singer after his sponsors failed to come up with the $20 million necessary for a ticket to the heavens.

A spokesman for David Krieff, the Hollywood producer who was supposed to be financing the Bass mission to the International Space Station, said, "It's not over 'til it's over," but in Moscow, the fat lady is singing.

Sergei Gorbunov, spokesman for the Russian Space Agency, told the Associated Press the Russians negotiated with Bass "in good faith,'' but "his sponsors didn't fulfill the conditions of the contract and we never received the money.''

The Russians had granted Bass and Krieff several deadline extensions after failing to get the money needed to secure his seat, Gorbunov said. He said the decision to end negotiations was made after "crude violations'' of the contract.
