"U.S. Vice President Dan Quayle instructed a student to spell "potato" with an "e" on the end during a spelling bee. He had relied on a faulty flash card."

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

1. "He had relied on a faulty flash card."
First time I've heard that one.

S'funny, if he had just come out and said, "Don't know what I was thinking...I need to take a third-grade refresher course!" people would have laughed, and the incident would be all but forgotten.

We can thank Republican's anal-retentive obsession with appearing infallible, combined with a general privileged-class ineptitude--for cementing that incident in history.

2. I still remember the Murphy Brown fiasco
Who convinced him let himself be filmed by the media while watching the next episode in which he is brutally insulted in retaliation?

That guy had the worst advisors on earth.

Ask me to tell you about them time I got on the air live with his campaign manager on Cspan ...

go ahead, ask me ...

5. 'kay, here's the scene

Okay, I call up Cspan and hold - you know - forever until finally I get a producer. I claimed that I wanted to ask if Quayle was planning on running for president in 2000. They let me through.

Next thing I know I'm live on the air. I say, in my thick New York accent, "High Times magazine did an interview witha guy who says that he used to sell Dan Quayle pot! Is it true?" I put a lot of emphasis on the word "true".

The host asks, "What magazine, caller?"
I say, "High Times."
He grins broadly, certain he's on the phone with a dope fiend. Then they hung up on me.

The campaign manager of course said something like, "That story has been totally disproven long ago."

Well, not so fast there mister ... for the next two hours person after person called in to say that they thought I was right and that Quayle WAS on drugs.

I specifically remember one caller who sounded like a old midwestern grandma said, "His eyes always look glassy. He never makes sense. I think he IS on drugs!"

The manager kept saying stuff like, "The cameras can make you look glassy-eyed sometimes." But it was too late. The whole show was about Dan Quayle's "drug problem".

:P

4. "Well you know you CAN spell it that way"
No mom you can't :eyes: this was the first of what would become me trying to hold back the wave of disinformation that would pass through her.
