Would you believe hubby and I watched the movie twister last night for
probably the 20th time?

Not sure why but feel compelled to watch it a couple times a year. Guess it has to do with our fascination with tornadoes. Living in Maine, we don't see anything like that here. *and thank heavens*

like this site. http://www.mesoscale.ws/pictures/

Coming from Kansas, I am fascinated by them too and take every opportunity to try to see one.

"Much of Twister was shot in the digital domain, with the ones representing incompetence and the zeroes representing crap."

plus I get all kinds of hurricane after effects since I live about 3 hours away from the coast.

natural disasters of epic proportions here. I wouldn't know what to do as far as safety precautions if I lived anywhere else.

7. We always had tornado drills growing up at school.
But basically get on the lowest level of the house and in a room with no windows and get something to cover your head. That is about all you can do if ever in that situation!!

I live a few hours away from the gulf coast and also I live in tornado alley. I guess you get used to it. I can't tell you how many 20-75 year old trees I've seen ripped up from their roots. Or how many roofs I've seen ripped off. Just about a month ago, the roof of a school was ripped completely off. Luckily it was a new school and wasn't quite ready for students. A poor bus driver had to pull over and get all of the kids in a ditch because of all of the debris blowing across the road. I am used to it though; tornadoes don't typically scare me!

Tornadoes are so strange...I've seen buildings splintered, but the one next to it is fine.

Hurricanes, everything gets hit.

Hang in there!

20. That is so true.
A tornado ripped up the whole fence of my next door neighbor's house, but it didn't touch mine at all. They kind of bounce around. I will literally be hanging in there.

15. No you don't.....
I saw the May 5th tornado in Oklahoma City. It was over a mile wide and looked like a black wall coming at you. Wiped out half the south side of OKC and totally destroyed Moore. The city went under marshal law and the national guard totally shut the south side down for three days. You should have seen it, all the cars evacuating north and the sky was orange from all the gas line fires. Total panic. All power phone etc was down for days. Two of my brothers were forced to walk out of Moore with their families to my mom's house in SW OKC. The roads were all closed from the police and national guard. The General Motors plant were my dad works was also hit and with no phones we didn't know if he survived. My poor mother thought most of our family had been killed that day but luckily no one was seriously hurt but my brother lost his house. Very scary stuff.

17. I was working at Tinker AFB...
when the big one hit. We lived in Del City. We were lucky. Two-three blocks away, the neighborhood was wiped out. We didn't even have debris in the yard. I didn't catch up with my husband and sons till after 1:00 a.m., since I was at work in a hardened facility, and they had to go to a shelter at the high school. One of the most frightening times of my life, to date.

We live in central PA now, where tornadoes seldom occur, and I'm glad of it.

22. Even an F1 would terrify me. I showed them some pics of an F5 I googled
but they (the kids) are so little they don't understand the deffierence in the ratings. (I even used the movie's explanantion for them.. that the number is determined by how much a tornado eats.. they sorta got it after that.)

25. I am SO staying in Maine.. no tornadoes.. no earthquakes...
Worst we get is a worn-out hurricane or a blizzard.

The ice storm of 98 sucked, tho. We went without power and heat for ten days, except for a very scary kerosene heater. (I long for the day I can afford to build a solar home with a woodstove for backup heat.)

28. We had a terrible ice storm in 94. We were without power for 3 weeks
and water for like a week. We seem to get all of the crappy weather. The ice storm was very severe and people dies from falling limbs and branches and it killed several trees, but it sure was beautiful to see all of the trees covered top to bottom in ice.

that's also "hokey" but I like to watch it and that is "The Mummy"

I couldn't stand either movie when I first saw them but then watched them again and they somehow grew on me.

27. Poor Melissa, though.
I mean, they kept shoving her to the side, making her go grab drinks, telling their inside jokes, not explaining things that went over her head, laughing when she was screaming hysterically because she'd almost been killed. That's just rude.

31. And conversely, I've never seen that movie.
Having lived through and fully experienced eight of those things, I don't need a movie to show me how bad, and actually quite cool in their own way, tornadoes really are. I've been there in real life.

But I do have to mention that tornadoes, in fact any big storms out here, are something that you should experience. Yes, it can be terrifying, but the energy, the power is absolutely amazing.

I am still seething over the time I wasted watching it when it came on HBO (I knew not to rent it).

I wanted to throw a brick at the TV during the last scene, where they are smooching INSIDE A FUNNEL CLOUD. I suppose if you're going to make a movie SUCK, you should just pile on as much crap and cheese as it will allow!
