1. It was the scientist's id
made manifest by his use of some of the technology left behind by the planet's ancient inhabitants.

Was his name Dr. Mobius? Something like that, I think.

2. It was his id? Well, that's different.
Was the girl really his daughter or was she an android or something? As a feminist I was officially rolling my eyes with the stupid "What's a kiss?" subplot, but whatever, it was the 50s.

3. She was really his daughter
The movie is pretty much an updating of Shakespeare's The Tempest. Of course, Shakespeare didn't use aliens or wild ids to do his mischief. :-)

4. The night watchmen is killing everyone, becuase the planet was forbidden
but those darn kids wouldn't listen. So, something had to be done.

In the end, though, he is foiled and uncovered by Scooby and the gang.

He would have gotten away with it, if it weren't for those meddling kids...

5. Prospero turns into some post-Freudian Faust
Everything goes kablooey because:

"They forgot about...Monsters from the Id!!!!!"

Wow, I laughed and laughed. That line cracks me up. :)

Basically, the scary contents of the smartypants scientist's subconscious ran around killing everyone. (If only he hadn't been so foolish as to seek knowledge! Gah!) Popular culture seems to like to kick out that kind of message during our more conservative periods. Fear your deeper self! Repress, don't integrate! Fear your neighbor, because he might be a Scary Weirdo! Columbo versus CSI comes to mind, in the crime and punishment genre....

I was convinced the whole thing was going to be a cold war science fiction treatment of The Tempest, and it seemed to be, up to a point.

Hope that's not too inarticulate and all over the place. My book reports used to be like that, too. :)
