Texas and California
Someone here on DU put it best when they said "Texas and California are America on steroids." Probably the most astute comment that has ever been made about this rivalry. Which begs the question, is there a rivalry? You bet there is. Today's descent into punches should be an indication.

Both used to be separate nations. Both have bloody histories. Both have evil Republicans who claim the state as their home. Both have Democratic heroes who came out of there. And both have had Kennedys assasinated in them.

Both states have a "just leave me alone" mindset among its denizens, and both have rich agricultural histories. Both have Superbowl champions, and both have unique cuisines, their own takes on Mexican food and their own versions of BBQ.

And from a sex-crazed males point of view, both have some very beautiful women.

So it seems natural there would be a rivalry between these two places, since both have taken the American Dream and given very different stamps on them.

1. I'm not sure we have a "just leave me alone" mindset in CA
but I'm sure some of us do. Personally it's more a "we're right, you should do it our way, you crazed inbred hillbillies" attitude.

I love your Kennedy connection!!

2. It's there, but it's vastly different than Texas'
In California, you get things like Medical Marijuana - and the entire Marijuana industry (and counties like Mendocino and Humboldt which dropped ALL enforcement of Marijuana laws)

In Texas, it's more towards hunting and guns.

3. I lived in Humboldt for 6 years, and there was always a palpable
fear of CAMP helicopters. That's federal, of course, though.
