Anyone else getting bizarre, out-of-state calls?
I've gotten three over the past few days, from Georgia, Nebraska, and Alabama. My roommate answered the first call (Georgia), the guy on the other end was asking for me by first name, and then said "Just tell him Big Jerry called." :wtf: Who the fuck is Big Jerry? No one was home to answer the other two.

I tried calling the Georgia number back, only to realize that the number is invalid: the three-digit exchange starts with a zero, as it does for the other two numbers as well.

"Georgia:" 478-075-2439
"Nebraska:" 402-093-3216
"Alabama:" 256-083-7239

A call to the operator brought up the possibility of it being an international call, with only some of the digits showing up on my Caller-ID. But now that I've gotten three different numbers in three days, I doubt that.

So what the hell is this? Three calls from three invalid numbers purporting to be from three different states. Anyone else getting weird calls? Any idea who these people might be, or what, if anything, I should do about them?

3. I always look at caller ID
and if I don't recognize the number, I don't answer. If it is really that important, they can leave a message.

I have been receiving a lot of calls from out of state lately. They don't leave a message. So I gather it's just telemarketers who aren't abiding by the do not call list.

6. Yeah, me too, but for a lot of out-of-state calls my ID only shows
the state that is calling me, not the name. So I probably would have answered the call from Alabama, 'cause I know people down there.

4. Me too...
Except the exchanges that have been calling us don't begin in zero.

But, the weird thing, when we try to call one of the phone numbers back to see why they keep calling us, we get a recording saying the number has been disconnected.

7. Yeah,
sorta like my calls. Are telemarketers really sinking so low as to falsify their phone numbers?

Wait...don't answer that :eyes:

9. Definitely
I get some from numbers like "111-111-1111"

If they are using an IP phone and a cooperative provider, they
can supply any "phone number" they want.

11. I had a woman crying and saying she loved "me" from Florida
I got a florida call and on the message you could hear a woman crying, can't quite remember what she was saying but finished with a "I love you". Have no idea who it could possibly be so I think she got a hold of the wrong number.

12. Weird world we live in
I vaguely recall receiving a 478 area code call a couple of weeks ago - business call, seemingly legitimate. I checked the reverse directory and did a google search and found that the number was probably a calling card number. The person never followed up, and all I had was a bogus number, so that's just plain strange.

I don't know of any exchange that begins with 0, so my first inclination is to think this whole thing is bogus, but for what reason, who knows.

15. Weird the last 3 numbers on my caller ID can't be located on
reverse look-up. I never answer this phone and nobody that I know has this number. In fact, it is rarely even plugged in. I'm going to do a little more digging into these numbers, I'm intrigued now.

19. I get calls like this from Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Alabama, and some other
states, but I never answer them, and they never leave messages. The Georgia number that calls me is not the same as the Georgia number that called you.
