Zell Miller question
A freeper acquaintance of mine was pointing to Zell Miller as a speaker for all Democrats.

He claims that because Miller held office for so long, he is well placed to speak for Democrats in embracing Bush.

My question is this:

I am guessing that Miller was a democrat back in the bad old days, pre-civil-rights, when the democrats were the party of hate and racism, especially in the South.

If so, this would well explain why he tends to stick with repugs, and says the Ds are too liberal... anybody treating non-whites as human would be too liberal.

Anybody know if there's truth to this, or am I totally wrong? Give me links to quotes or voting records showing this, not just gut-feeling agreement, please.

2. Yeah, Zell has old-south roots
He was Lester Maddox's chief of staff. But his record is kind of all over the place, hence "Zig Zag Zell." In 1990 he self-identified as a New Democrat, and used Carville and Begala to run his gubernatorial campaign. And some say that his stint as governor, while not progressive, was enlightened to a surprising degree. Since becoming a senator though, he seems to have come full circle, back to being a liberal-despising reactionary.
