Build your own Mac
http://buildyourownmac.com/

I was excited to learn of Apple switching to Intel. But then I learned that the Mac OSX may not run on an Intel platform the way MS Windows does. Hopefully this will be resolved because I believe Apple could really put a hurting on MS if they would just let the end user clone their machines.

1. Seems they tried to launch MAC clones a couple times in the past
First time was in the early 1990's when the MAC was still somewhat competititve in the market share. Then they tried again in the mid 90's. Not sure why they never took off. They were pricier than PC's but cheaper than the official MAC from what I remember.

2. They sued the crap out of everybody who tried.
A Brazilian company called Unitron successfully cloned the very first Mac. They were sued into oblivion.

That's one of the reasons Macs never took off in Brazil.

3. Jobs won't allow cloning
Power Computing did it in the 90's and was kicking Apple's ass at it. Their CPUs at the time were much more powerful, more expansion and options available, and considerably cheaper. This was when Apple's then top of the line 9500 was selling aroung $4k. Motorola and Umax made some too but weren't as stable. Daystar made the Genesis MP workstation with a whopping FOUR processors in one CPU. Imagine a G5 today running like that.

The move to Intel is a smart one. IBM just wasn't putting enough into R&D and the Mac processors suffered for it.

But Jobs needs to allow for cloning...when he does Mac is going to kill MS.
