Dad was a 30-year USAF vet, went to work for them after he retired, and collects USAF retirement. :-)

23. My dad was a B-29 pilot with the

40th Bomb Group (20th Air Force) flying out of India, then China and finally Tinian in WWII. The Army Air Corps never put food on any of us, however.:evilgrin:

3. Army...

My father was in the Army Corps of Engineers. He received the soldiers medal right next to Joe Lewis. He saved the life of one of two African American soldiers who was about to drown. His command was an all 'black' outfit and he was just one of the guys. I'll treasue my dad's story and that picture for the rest of my life.

He was a very good man...

One of the greatest boxers of the 20th century. He held the title for 12 years, the longest reign ever in modern boxing.

Joe Louise was at the ceremony filling in for another soldier who was to receive the medal as well. The only thing is, the soldier had shot himself in the leg to get out of the army. Joe Louis was just there to take his place at the ceremony. My dad told me the soldier that shot himself in the leg was dishonorably discharged and if my memory serves, they took his medal back. I can't remember that part.

8. I voted Coast Guard...

Those poor guys always get the shaft, while A/N/AF/M get all the glory. When was the last time you saw a movie about the Coast Guard?

It's like the punter on a football team -- he doesn't get the groupies, but damned if they can be successful without him!

17. In peacetime, the Coasties aren't part of the military

they're part of the Department of Transportation. They only fall under the Department of the Navy in wartime.

(My ex-husband was a Coastie, my current husband was a Marine, my dad was in the Navy, my brothers were in the Army and Air Force, and my uncle was a Merchant Marine, so my family has ALL the bases covered!)

9. It is all about the riflemen

the Army or USMC are the ones who do the dirty work and win the wars. My father's side of my family has a long history of US Army service including combat in WWI, WWII and Korea, as well as non-combat service.
My mother's family are Russian Immigrants, but they are soldiers as well--ancestors of mine fought in WWI, on different sides in the Russian Civil War, in the Great patriotic War (WWII. My grandfather was a Soviet Army Officer)

14. Hmmmm.....

I'm conflicted (yeah, I know...bad pun). I served 9 years in the Navy and 11 in the Army. Went from blue to green in 24 hours. Had good times and bad times in both. Never really bought into the bullshit, just practiced my craft (Mariner) and loved it. Also was a CWO which is about as independent as you can get in the machine.

And yeah, the Coast Guard doesn't get enough respect. They do some seriously extreme stuff.

You're right about that - my ex-husband used to go ballistic if anyone called him a "shallow-water sailor." He saw more sea duty and more blue water than ten Navy veterans. He went from the Arctic to the Antarctic twice on an icebreaker.

The Coast Guard right now is in desperate need of civilian volunteers. Their scope has been expanded well beyond what their staff can handle, and most of the Coasties are working long, long hours. The CG Auxiliary is actually doing useful work in vessel safety and such now, not just holding bake sales. I'm considering volunteering as an Auxiliary member, because I know how hard they're working and how valuable a lot of what they're doing is.
