Indian tribe claims real estate of the rich and famous

"NEW YORK (AFP) - A tribe of American Indians has filed a lawsuit claiming ownership of some of the world's costliest real estate in the Long Island summer playground of New York's rich and famous.

The suit, filed in US District Court on Wednesday by the Shinnecock Indian Nation, lays claim to 3,600 acres (15 square kilometers) of prime land in The Hamptons, as well as billion of dollars in back rent and interest.

The lawsuit claims the land was "stolen" by the state in 1859 when a group of private investors tricked members of the tribe into signing over their ownership rights."

This isn't meaning a flamefest here at DU, just one in general.

1. Statute of limitations would kill their case, or am I wrong? (nt)

2. You would think so
But it might end up being a pretty hot debate.

3. But it would be nice to see it established that it was theft and...
...the ONLY reason they don't get their land back is the statute of limitations.

4. Not necessarily. It's a bit of a stretch, but if new information became
available, it could potentially toll the statute. It happens in rare instances, but it does happen.
