Best modern-era singer who doesn't/didn't write his or her own songs? |

A strong case could be made for either Elvis or Frank Sinatra, who took other peoples' songs and made them their own.
What do you think?

But Frank did cross boundaries and made stuff his own or at least did good interpretations -- the Beatles come to mind.
